If you're installing a new drive, I suggest doing a clean Win10 install on it first. (Disconnect the other drives while you're doing it, to be safe.) It won't take long with an SSD, and it will eliminate most of the possible errors in the OS.

If you get a good result, it'll pretty much prove that the problem is either with your current Win10 installation, or a hardware problem with the old disk.

Various issues can cause a slow boot. A SSD will drastically speed up your system.

You can try doing a boot trace but the result can be hard to analyse. Some kind soul on the forum may help. See Slow Login After 1803 Upgrade

Can see logic in that .... how can I check that all will be OK with anew install, I had a 3 month delay as I could not remember admin account password ... I finally found that.
I want to check all is a correct with license (mentioned above it is on-line) can I do a check to make sure email/ID etc is OK, and ideally get a copy ..... don't want to be locked out of PC after upgrade.

With a digital license, there is no key for you to discover, as far as I know.

You won't be locked out, even if the Windows copy isn't activated.

OK - good to know, for an education point ... how does MS know it is me and that I have a valid license if this is a clean install ? if I'm not putting in any username, how does it identify the PC ?

Sniffing your hardware, you should pardon the expression, using an algorithm of some type.

I believe that it also uses your Microsoft Account, if you set up the new Windows installation to use the old account.

That is the bit that worries me ... I know the password for the account - but not any username or email that is linked to license.
Do you know where I can find that on the PC ?

I have this nagging worry that after upgrade will pop up a window that asks for username name and password or the email account associated with machine.

Just want to make sure I have this to hand before I do clean install.
