    Usb - c / thunderbolt issue

    Hi,

Recently purchased a Razer, currently transferring files over from my ATOM RAID 2 TB EXTERNAL SSD, USB-C / Thunder-Bolt 3 Drive to another External connected via USB 3 via Windows 10.

Any time I attempt to transfer files, the ATOM RAID begins to transfer and then the speed shoots to 0 and the drive is disconnected, then re-connected on its own accord it seems.

When I attempt to run Crystal Mark Test on it, it makes the disconnected Audio as the Test begins, with the test never being able to start.

Through the only process of elimination I have, I disconnected the drive and connected it via USB 3.0, with the cable provided and tests were fine and Crystal Mark was able to begin and finish. Unfortunately I don't have any other USB-C or Thunderbolt External Devices to test the port out.

The SSD worked flawlessly on my iMac 5K Thunderbolt 3 Drive.

I have formatted the Drive to NTFS, several times but that has not changed anything.

I have perused Device Manager, but I cannot find anything in specific detailing Thunderbolt or USB-C, only USB 3.0 and the device hence also appears under a USB 3.0 nomenclature. I haven't used Windows in sometime, so I'm unsure if USB-C is labeled USB 3.0 regardless.

    Attached are some screenshots.

The Drive is labeled VIOLENCE, even after failure of copying files, it remains connected it seems, or it disconnected and reconnects instantly. I hear two audibles, so I'm assuming the latter.

Hopefully I can resolve this today and hopefully it is not a Hardware Issue, my Razer Blade has been flawless otherwise

As you can see on the FINAL Image, Windows Devices labels is as USB 3.0, even though it is connected to the USB-C port

Probably not enough power for that unit to keep it connected. Try a external USB-C hub to see if it solves the problem.

I switched my Samsung T2 External 250 GB SSD, using the same cable, to the USB-C Port and it worked, well, showing that the Port isn't the issue.

I've also connected the GLYPH 2TB to a USB 3 Port, using a USB-C to USB 3.0 Cable and it also worked without issue.

    Both testing with Crystal Mark.

Is it possible the USB 3 port is providing more power than the USB-C?

USB type-C just refers to the physical port. You can run various protocols through that port - USB 2.0, USB 3.1, Thunderbolt, HDMI, etc. For instance, the Pixel phone has a USB type-C port but only supports USB 2.0 over it. The USB controller is the one that determines what goes over which physical ports, which is why Windows only refers to the USB 3.1 controller and not type-A or type-C port.

It is possible that the Razer is not supplying as much power through the type-C as the type-A. There are multiple power levels that a USB port can supply, depending on the system design. I couldn't find much information about the motherboard in that laptop so you might want to try asking Razer support.

Never stated that it was a port issue. Some drives require more power to allow them to run. Use a external hub to power the Atom drive. Your USB ports on your computer do not have enough power to power that drive. Crystal Mark is not going to do anything. Yes, USB-3/C/Thunderbolt require more power.

    Thank you for your reply,

However, I don't believe the situation is power being generated, unless I fail to understand the power distribution from a USB port.

The GLYPH ATOM RAID SSD, has a green light which indicates when the drive is connected; which has stayed on.

Additionally, a few video files were able to be copied before the File Speed eventually hits 0 and disconnects and strangely enough, I am able to watch these videos, streaming from the Drive, without any buffering ( which would indicate data loss due to disconnect ) and without the drive disconnecting itself.

The latter, making no sense, with an open channel of data stream, versus transferring a large amount of files causes a disconnect. Even just beginning to run Crystal Mark Test, causes an immediate disconnect.

Go to the driver download page for you PC. Make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers installed

    Did so, to no avail.

So, trickle down process of elimination.

The USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 port, works in that I can attach an external Samsung T3 250 GB SSD and READ/WRITE without issues.

I am doing this by using the very same cable, I have attached the external Glyph Atom RAID 2 TB SSD with.

    So Port, Cable, are working.

Question is, is it an issue of the USB-C port not supplying enough power?
When I connect the GLYPH, which it is connected at this very moment; the green light on the disk remains on & I am able to stream videos that are currently on the drive.

Does the drive require more power to WRITE than to READ?

Or is it merely a driver / bug issue?

I already replied to you and explained that built in USB ports do not have enough power, unless it is a add-in card on a desktop and uses the Power Rail to up the power to the ports to give 2.1 amps and 5 volts at each port. Thunderbird/USB-3/USB-C use more power and require a external hub.
