    HDD not recognized

I have a device that allows exploring HDDs via a UHB hookup. I have several HDDs and have been able to view contents with a device purchased from Cables-to-Go. I don't think that I've used it subsequent to Win 10. Now when I use it it the drives hooked aren't recognized. The documentation provided says that the HDD may need to be reformatted, which I may do if needed, But I can't see the HDDs at all. There is a momentary blast of the HDD name - then disappearing. After disappearing the drives aren't visible in Disk Management.

How can I access these drives (most IDE) to either see the info inside or to reformat if necessary?

    Thanks

Are you using an external power adapter with the device you purchased from Cables-to-Go?

The device plugs in to the wall on one end. The other end has adapters for both scsi and ide drives. Both data and power connectors of course. Then there is a USB cord to plug to the computer.

The device worked fine years ago. I'm thinking that the only change may be my switch from Windows 7 to ten.

With it connected, you can look in device manger for unknown devices or devices with an Exclamation Point.

I've used similar drive enclosures with Windows since XP without issues, actually have a case with a DVD drive in it now for portable use. An upgrade for Windows 98 to Windows 98SE/Second Edition was support for drivers for such USB 2 devices. I have noticed some things that use USB 2 ports don't always work good with USB 3 ports. For portable uses I've upgraded to WDC MyPassport drives, an older 750GB USB 2 and a year-old 1TB USB 3 which is backward compatible to USB 2. Both are USB powered, single cord. I also have a couple of cases for 2.5" drives that use a Y-cable necessary when the ports don't provide sufficient power to the drive.

Nothing unknown. No explanation points. But sometimes the device connects and sometimes it doesn't. I'm attaching a screen capture with the device connected and recognized in Device Manager (highlighted one) but not in Windows Explorer.

"Properties" says that the device is working properly and using the most up-to-date drivers.

Also a scan of the device box FWIW.HDD not recognized-2018-08-05-2-.pngHDD not recognized-hdd-adapter-box.jpg

It won't show up in Windows Explorer unless it has a drive letter in disk management. Does the drive appear in disk management?

No - it's like it doesn't exist except in Device Manager. Also - those little "connect/disconnect" chimes that ring out when something is connected to the USB port come and go without any movement of any part of the system. This happens regardless of which of the several discs that I attach to the adapter.

I'm beginning to think that the adapter may have gone bad. I posted here to see if there is some diagnostics of which I'm not aware.

I've got one of those SATA/IDE hard drive to USB adapters as well, and it does work with Windows 10, although I don't think I have tried it with an IDE hard drive, only SATA. I would say that either the adapter has gone bad, assuming you have tried more than 1 hard drive and they all give the same results.

If you are plugging in a 3.5" HDD you need to attach Power cable to the drive as well. It won't power up with just the USB to IDE adapter https://www.amazon.com/AGPtek-Drive-...+Drive+adapterif you are connecting a 2.5" drive, it won't require power. In Device Manager, expand Disk Drives, you should see the drive listed there as well.
Also be sure you are plugging it into the Back USB port of a computer (Desktop) and not the front or thru a Hub as those ports are weaker.
