Urgent Advice on Windows 10 Storage Spaces! - Repairing Volume

    Hi all,

Long story short. I had a x3 4TB WD RED Drive set up in Parity mode within Windows Storage Spaces. Totally healthy. I added a 4th drive last night, and began to optimise it. It reached about 0.58% Used and then WINDOWS decided to reboot my computer after an update with no warning...

I logged back in as fast as I could to find my storage pool of D:\ drive totally non-existent in windows explorer. I also couldn't open Storage Spaces, nothing would happen when I tried. I saw an active process in task manager but trying to kill it even with CMD, apparently the PID didn't exist.. So in a last ditch attempt I powered down again. Disconnected and reconnected all my drives, started and alas eventually out of nowhere, my D:\ showed up... Once I got Storage spaces open, it was very laggy, and registered that the 4th added drive was in warning and suggested I replace it (I will attach some screenshots from my entire process).

I eventually scoured the internet and decided to act using Powershell. I identified the bad disk, named it, retired it, and began repair-virtualdisk. It's been running a FULL DAY on 6.5TB of data and it's reached about 43%. Now, it is moving along which is reassuring. I can see the usage for the bad disk within the storage pool application has dropped from 0.58% to around 0.17% now.. So I'm guessing that's a good sign assuming the rest of my 3 drives are being 'rebuilt?..'

What I need from you guys is:
    - Have I done the right thing?
    - Once the repair is complete, can I then remove the bad disk from the pool and disconnect it?
    - Will my data be okay on my other 3 drives?
    - Is there anything else I should do?

    Before beginning virtual disk repair:

Current status as of now 24 hours into it:

To note, I can 'technically' access the data, but reads are incredibly incredibly slow, I can barely play the video files but the metadata suggests it's all intact... I'm taking a wild guess that it's because the storage pool is currently unhealthy... Basically I can't even do a manual backup because when I try to copy anything it drops to around 0kb/s and nothing moves from the pool to the backup - That does worry me..

Thank you very much in advance!

WINDOWS decided to reboot my computer after an update with no warning
Hi, I'm wondering if you had Active Hours set - that shouldn't happen if you have Active Hours set, if the restart was related to a Windows update.

You have Pro - do you have updates set to Notify you (in group policy)? That means they are only applied when you allow them to be. And you can defer feature updates for up to 365 days.

Which was your update? (See Update History).

I seem to recall a thread on Storage Spaces where the whole thing had to be rebuilt after an upgrade (feature update) - a thought prompted by your comment on how slow yours is.

If using Storage Spaces, I think a disk monitor is essential (e.g. Crystal Diskinfo, Hard Disk Sentinel) to alert you of degradation. Of negligible benefit in the event of catastrophic failure (less common); it may have helped in detecting a problematic disk added to the system before you had extended Storage Spaces to include it. Failing disks present a particularly significant risk in this context.

Sorry, I'm no expert on Storage Spaces so can't attempt to answer your most immediate question.

    Hi,

Thanks for your input. I'm not sure on my update settings, I'll have to check. I configured everything on setup nearly a year ago. The newly added disk was functioning as expected, the issue being the processes were interrupted it seems...

To anyone who stumbles across this thread, the repair job completed 100% 'apparently'. The bad disk dropped to 0.01% usage by the end. I've just 'removed it' using the option in storage spaces. But my read/write times are still slow so I'm going to do a reboot and check for any improvement.

Restarted my PC and my storage pool has disappeared again - I don't know what's going on, or what to do! It was reading as healthy again before I restarted!?

I can't open storage spaces, again. Like my original issue. I can't seem to start or shutdown my computer. And looking at task manager my D:\ drive, although it 'doesn't exist' in windows explorer, is running at 100% activity. With read speeds popping up to 1.0MB/s every now and then. I'm losing my head with this.

This sounds very familiar.. the thread I mentioned. Again, what was the update? Have a look at your Upgrade History.

I think the story then was there was a feature update, and to gain access to the Storage Pool the user had to 'Go back to the previous build'.

If you search the site for
    Storage Spaces
you'll probably find it relatively easily as there aren't many posts on that.

There doesn't actually look like there is one that occurred at the time it happened

Umm, that's that idea out of the window.. FWIW here's the thread I was thinking of..
How do I recover/repair my storage space? Solved - Windows 10 Forums

WINDOWS decided to reboot my computer after an update with no warning...
    - so perhaps the cause of the reboot indicates a different problem - PSU? other hardware problem?

Was a BSOD reported? (Check using Bluescreenview - free).

Your Reliability History might show something.. (Reli in Cortana's search field)

Yup - ok thanks. I think I did stumble across that, but it's a bit off the mark, but useful to know. My local disk D:\ is in the process of appearing (W Explorer is currently frozen). It's almost as if any activity at all throws it to 100% activity, meaning it's actually taking an age to mount the drive at all on boot..

Powershell won't even fully load as I wanted to run some checks with that.. When it was last online, the data seemed to be there and available, but it certainly isn't functioning correctly, and worryingly it's impossible to backup in it's current state. Maybe I'm going to try with new sata cables for a sanity check.

Guys - I think I've fixed it. Eventually D:\ fully mounted and I was able to shutdown my PC. I left it powered down for a few mins and then individually disconnected each of my 3 drives, then reconnected them. Started her up and looks like my read and write speeds are back. I've just watched and copied something fine. Although, Windows did just warn me of a drive error... So I'm going to check that out then resolve my thread if need be.

Good news! Best make sure you maintain a full backup and install a disk monitoring program.

But do have a look at the ideas I suggested about the unexpected restart- and then the event viewer may be worth a look. If it's happened once, could happen again..
