I want to clear the partitions from a 1 tb backup drive
I tried deleting the partitions by formatting them but it only removed the files in the partitions and the partitions are still there. see pic below

First, you better make darn sure the disk is no longer your boot priority disk!
Then, starting from right to left, delete the partitions, then, again from right to left, extend partitions.

so I want to make the image disk before I update to win 10 ver 1903. macrium shows all the partitions like C:, G, D, system reserved, dell support, etc. which one do I actually need to make an image?
