Drive almost out of space and causing notifications, but doesn't exist

    Hi,

For several weeks Windows 10 has been giving me notifications that a Drive E is almost out of space. The notifications occur constantly while I am trying to work and are very annoying. The worst thing is that this is not even a real disk on my computer. It says it is almost full but if I click in there, nothing is there! If I try to access it in Disk Management, I don't get any options other than help, while for the other drives I get a slew of options. Can anyone help me figure out what is going on with this drive and how to stop the constant notifications? I attached several images but I don't use forums a lot and am not familiar with how to put an image right in here.

    Thank You!!

Open a command prompt or powershell and run:
    diskpart

After accepting the administrator warning, from the diskpart prompt run:
    select volume E
    remove letter=E
    exit
    exit

I see what the words say on that E: drive, but the size and space used, along with it's position with the EFI and OS, strongly suggest it is the Recovery Partition.

I'd suggest the OP run the following command at an Admin Command prompt to see if the system still recognizes it as the Recovery Partition for the OS.

It is a major "xxx-up" by Microsoft.

Actually it doesn't matter for the OP at all (it is not a problem, so don't worry about it) but so many people get panicked by this message that I'm not sure what MSFT could do to correct it. Automatically ignore some partitions? Randomly remove drive letters?

For the OP, remove "E". For someone else it could be "D". Or "F". There isn't a standard solution I can think of.

@zbook wrote a response and deleted it. I'll reply anyway.

What you need to understand is a 499MB partition isn't that big. If you want to look at 250 MiB and 250 MB you obviously can (you can use Wikipedia) but it is just numbers - essentially the MiB is (not much) smaller and also in this case utterly irrelevant.

If you can't figure out the difference then forget it. It is less than 10% and a very small fraction of your C drive.

To put it clearer for you, your recovery partition is about 5000000000000000 times bigger.

I'm sorry, lx07, but you really lost me there. My recovery partition is exactly 499MB.

    1) Please re-post the image of disk management:
Disk Management - How to Post a Screenshot of | Windows 10 Tutorials
(widen each the status and volume columns so that the characters in the rows is not cut off)

    2) Download and install minitool partition wizard and post an image into the thread:

    3) For recovery drive:
    Code:
Recovery tools partitionThis partition must be at least 300 MB.
This partition must have enough space for the Windows Recovery Environment tools image (winre.wim, typically between 250-300MB, depending on base language and customizations added), plus enough free space so that the partition can be captured by backup utilities:

    • If the partition is less than 500 MB, it must have at least 50 MB of free space.
    • If the partition is 500 MB or larger, it must have at least 320 MB of free space.
    • If the partition is larger than 1 GB, we recommend that it should have at least 1 GB free.
    • This partition must use the Type ID: DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC.
    • The recovery tools should be in a separate partition than the Windows partition to support automatic failover and to support booting partitions encrypted with Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption.
We recommend that you place this partition immediately after the Windows partition. This allows Windows to modify and recreate the partition later if future updates require a larger recovery image.

    4) Update the system specs in the "My Computer" section:

In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.

No, it is not. It is 499MiB. Windows just reports is wrong.

Have a look - download GDisk so you can see exactly how it is, type the start and end into your calculator application. Then divide them by 1000. Then divide them by 1024.

What you should realise is storage (disk) is divided by 1000. RAM is divided by 1024. This has been the same for 20 years or more.

What threw me is you saying it was 5000000000000000000 bigger. The rest is semantics.
