Surface Book battery drain while turned off

As the title describes, it happened this morning after charging it the night before to 100%, I disconnected the power source and had it on for a few minutes then turned if off. About nine hours later, I turn it one (without power chord) and it was at 33%!!

I ran a powecfg report and the cycles (~100) and watts seem normal.
I ran a sleep study and it showed a "abnormal shutdown" around the time I turned it on. Info is below.

The system is up to date per its own autoupdater.

    Any suggestions?

Time before the event (power report)

Did you recently install any new apps that could be calling home and or repeatedly checking statuses ?

Have you reviewed what apps can run in the background and disabled all except maybe mail.

Start > Settings > Privacy > Background Apps

Was this a one time event or is this a daily occurrence.

I looked at the event viewer and the closest is a complaint about a shut down. I'll check out the background app issue. I have not installed anything new.

I will note I often close the lid while it is shutting down. And as I have researched this after this event, I see that may keep it running instead of shutting off.

For event id 41 they typically occur when one of these happens:
    a) The end user instead or using the start menu uses the power switch to power off the computer
    b) a hardware problem
    c) a power outage
    d) a BSOD

Run the BETA log collector and post a zip into this thread:

    1) The logs displayed a recent unexpected reboot as above on July 18, 2018.
    2) There were two BSODs (June 2 and 3, 2018)
    3) The bugcheck was 3B
    4) There were no mini dump files collected

    5) In the left lower corner search type: system or system control > open system control panel > on the left pane click advanced system settings > un-check automatic restart > reboot

With this setting if there is a BSOD crash it should display a bugcheck with : (
Sometimes it may display a misbehaving driver in the form *.sys.
If you witness a BSOD it will display a % counter.
Allow it to rise to 100% before rebooting so that there is sufficient time to create the dump file.
This should capture most BSOD crashes but even BSOD can have crash dump failure and produce no dump files.
The dump files will be useful in debugging and troubleshooting if there are BSOD.

    6) Run memtest86+ version 5.01 for at least 8 passes.
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
This may take hours so plan to run it overnight.
    a) Please make sure you use the Memtest86+ version 5.01 with the link below.
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
The testing is done not by time but by passes.
    The more passes the better.
There are a significant number of false negatives if fewer than 8 passes are made.
A false negative is a test pass when there is malfunctioning RAM.
There is 8 GB of RAM on the computer.
    Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing takes approximately 1 - 2 hours /GB RAM
Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.
Then test 1 RAM module at a time in the same DIMM each for 8 or more passes.
    b) When Memtest86+ version 5.01 has completed 8 or more passes use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.

Excellent. As for BIOS, wouldn't that update come through the window 10 autoupdate? I looked at hardware event viewer and it was empty.

Unlikely that bios would be updated but some vendor update apps do update BIOS's. Windows update does not.

BIOS updates bring with them some risk. You can read about it.

I haven't had one go turtle. Have device plugged in, read instructions and be patient.

Good to know. I've updated bios before on my desktops. I see they have a newer package as of 5/2018.. Download Surface Laptop Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center

    thanks,
