    Phantom Hard Drive

    Hi,

I just noticed that a new drive appeared on my Desktop and I don't know what it is. In the file explorer it's displayed as SYSTEM (H:). When I try to view it I'm told I don't have permission to do that, and when I click on Continue to gain access I'm again told I don't have permission, but I should click on the Security tab. When I look at the properties I see that it's a local disk, FAT32, 76.2 MB used, 279 MB free, and 356 MB total size. When I look at Windows Disk Management there's no H: drive and nothing using FAT32.

Should I care about this? Should I try to get rid of it? I have Macrium Reflect installed and can restore the whole drive back probably a month in 1 day steps if I want to, but haven't tried that yet. Since Macrium doesn't see H: I'm not sure what the effect might be.

My Windows 10 Pro version 1803 says it was installed on 5/24/2018. I was just shown a message that my PC is about to be "improved" (boy am I excited!) by a major update, if that has anything to do with this. My PC is an HP EliteDesk 800 G3 TWR product number Y1B39AV.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Don't touch it it's the drive Windows boots from if you mess with it it won't boot. It should be hidden right click on it in disk management and remove the drive letter

    Samuria,

When I look at the Disk Manager I do see a partition labeled (Disk 0 Partition 1) with the same capacity (although it's 100% free and there's no drive letter). So that appears to be it.

However the Disk Manager doesn't list a drive letter, and right clicking on the partition it shows a grayed-out menu. That means I can't get rid of the drive letter the usual way. Is there another way to reclaim it?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Windows adds some drives (hidden and or not) for very special reasons.
It may not go well for you if you mess with it.

Can you also post what Macrium Reflect sees also? Thanks.
Note: MR has been patched twice in the last few days (that is a good thing), so be sure to update it when asked.

Yes, that's the System partition. As Samuria says, it should be hidden and not have a drive letter. Its seen as '100% free' and cannot be managed in Disk Management because it's a special protected system partition and you don't have the necessary permissions to read or change its properties.

It has been reported before that occasionally the update from one version of Windows to the next (you got updated to 1803 on 24/5) can leave the System partition and/or the Recovery partition (which should also be hidden) with a drive letter it shouldn't have.

To remove the drive letter, open a Command Prompt (Admin) type DISKPART then press the Enter key. At the DISKPART> prompt type the command...
    LIST VOLUME
...note the volume number of the System drive with the letter H. If, for example it's volume three type..
    SELECT VOLUME 3
    REMOVE LETTER=H

You can now close the Diskpart window.

All looks right except partition D, looks like it's manufacturer's restore partition containing original OS and eventually manufacturer's programs for computer management and should not have a letter. You can safely turn letter off in disk management.

Count Mike; thanks but that's My computer, not the one in Q. I posted, at same time as Bree, to see if the OP would do the same so we could see his disk structure. Regarding mine, it is the HP recovery drive but contents, long obsolete, replaced with copies of all my programs and Win10 ISO in case I need to reinstall or go back to older version.
