Does SS on my USB port indicate Super Speed.

    Hi,

I have two USB ports on the front of my desktop which has an SS(+trident) logo between the two. From my understanding, this should indicate Super Speed USB3 ports. But neither is the typical blue and the transfer rate when doing a bulk back up copy, reaches a maximum of around 35MB/s. This would only indicate a USB2. (Unfortunately, I can't remember the spec.)

How do I find out which it is, or is there a way to boost the transfer rate?

You can research the specs with the HP model number. The HP support site should have the specs, including the front panel ports.

Among other improvements, USB 3.0 adds the new transfer rate referred to as SuperSpeed USB (SS) that can transfer data at up to 5 Gbit/s (625 MB/s), which is about 10 times as fast as the USB 2.0 standard.

It's most likely the backup media. Are you backing up to USB's?
Cheap/Fake USB's don't have the performance or capacity as advertised. Buy quality USBs. I have a 64 GB Kingston HyperX USB that can achieve transfer rates >130 GB/s on USB 2 ports.

The back up is being transferred to a genuine WD extHDD which is USB3 supported. Even on large files (max transfer rate) it reaches 40MB/s certainly not 130 and definitely not as high as 625.

I excerpted your post. I have an Alienware R6, front panel has a cluster of USB ports 2 USB 2.0, 2 USB 3.0. Rear panel has 4 and 4, 4 black 4 blue. Front panel are all black, no blue. But 2 are USB 3.0. Mine aren't labeled SS, but do have a Power Symbol indicating extra amps for charging devices. They are USB 3.0. I think it's just esthetics......

I just had a look at the spec on line (thanks fireberd) and it suggests they are USB3. However, it also recons there should be a mic socket there as well, and there isn't. There are also apparently two USB3 ports on the back, so next time I do a back up I'll try it in one of these.

Is there a way in settings to change the level of the port? I.e. could it be that the port has been changed to 'simulate' a USB2?

What's the exact make/model or your WD external HDD? The issue might not be with the port but rather the device itself.
