    Insane...

I had to select Properties on the internal HDD "D" Drive and then click on the Customize tab.
Once done, I was able to select the appropriate icon from here:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\imageres.dll

I then used this program, IconsExtract, to extract the Icon Set from the above .dll:

    https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/iconsext.html

Finally, I picked and saved the Icon that I wanted from the set.
And used Customize (for the "D" drive) to find and apply the new .ico file.

Here is the result, except that I created a custom 16x16 Icon for my external "G" USB Drive.
Which is a WD Passport in black.

    Attachment 194586

    And that's the story.
Thanks for all the help and commentary.
    Good news so far.

I find that using 256x256 pixel .ico files work best for icons.

    @Access Denied -

Sure. I really wanted that icon, though!
    What's is your process?

    I can do...

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\d\DefaultI con

Depends on your Monitor Resolution and your View settings.
In my case everything is set to my liking.

It is clearly outlined in the tutorial but here is a screen shot that might help as well.

Yep just make sure to create the keys, letter for letter. I posted the screen shot so you could compare on your end.
