Should I leave the usb receiver out?
And do I need to dig around for those advance settings?

    Check those power settings first.

There were lots of elan drivers on Softpedia page.
Ok so that didnt solve it

I had the usb receiver out and updated the power settings as suggested and just now while on a web page the mouse just disabled itself. I had to manually plug in the usb receiver and enable the touchpad in the mouse properties

Step 1: Open Control Panel by navigating to Start menu and then clicking Control Panel.
Step 2: Change the default View to Small icons. Look for the entry named Mouse and click on the same to open Mouse Properties.

Step 3: Switch to the ELAN or Device Settings tab and look for an option titled Disable when external USB pointing device plug in or Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached. Check the same option and then click Apply button. That’s it!

    Could this be relevant?

hmmm had mixed response with this

I enabled the reg fix for palm tracking OFF - touchpad stopped working completely even after the stop/start touchpad bit
then did the fix for ON and still did nothing

restarted a laptop a couple of times and touchpad is back working so not sure if these reg fixes have done anything or not?
    how can i check?

Aaarghhhhh it happened again today even after I did the reg fix?

    Could it be this driver?

Ken I know you said that on softpedia site there are drivers up to version 22 but stupid question are there drivers for this specific laptop or are these drivers generic on a Windows laptop

Good point. That I can't answer. They should work on yours but did Toshiba customize the Elan driver, I don't know.

I think all vendors move away from this as they don't have resources to keep updating.

It can't be any worse !!

You tried the one from Toshiba's site, right?

Tbh having faffed around so much to get it to work in the 1st place I don't remember where I got this driver that is being used atm. It doenst appear on the softpedia site either.

Should I try that utility that you provided to see if I can extract the current driver?

And then try the newest driver from softpedia v22?

    Or

When in windows pe it was using a windows driver? Where would I get that? Just wonder if that will have all the functionality such as pinch zoom side swipe??
