    Nope def not

Fn and f5 is supposed to but I don't get a visual pop up to say its enabled or disabled.

A few times it's disabled I've just been hovering in a Web page and it's disabled. I think it's def a service or similar that's knocking it out

Please try ruling out hardware problems. That's relatively easy as I've suggested. I feel you could waste a lot of time trying to identify software.

Note: whilst you could use Sysinternals ProcMon to create a log of all activity, you don't know what to look for in such a massive log - no evidence of what might or might not be being written to- or by what.

Without other lines of investigation that leaves elimination. Thus I suggest the hardware approach (e.g. boot disk - for 'long enough' - overnight?) to show it's not been disabled.

(Note- when I use the key combo there's no acknowledgement at all (sound or visual) ).

By hardware do you mean boot off a boot disk into windows pe? I did that and the TouchPad works it installed a Microsoft driver doing so which doesn't give full TouchPad options such as pinch zoom etc.

Are you recommending to do this and leave it for a long period like overnight or do we think it's time to rebuild the Machine

Nope as the touchpad disables itself randomly.

Yes, exactly so. The underlying hardware/firmware/ etc is the same. Isolate that from the Windows environment.

On another tack: just tried Regshot and using Fn F1 key combo.
This seems to reveal other registry keys (note- these are Synaptic- you will have different results):

So do we suspect a hardware issue at this point.

Unless otherwise reported on internet as a known widespread issue maybe it is a hardware fault.

Unfortunately spending good money to prove may not be best approach.

Not sure how fast it disables itself but maybe getting a copy of Ubuntu will help isolate.

If you do get Ubuntu don't install it, Try it.

What I'm thinking. If the problems happens quite frequently they you should be able to recreate under Ubuntu.

Browse, click, move the mouse, whatever. If it stops in Ubuntu then we know it is not a Windows issue, although the clean install is pointing that way already. This is a confirmation.

Then if it fails in Ubuntu you would have to determine is it touchpad, MB, BIOS.
