Windows 10 does not play DVDs

    Hello

I have only recently noticed my PC's DVD player does not play standard film DVDs. Having looked up a few web sites I find that this is a familiar question given the apparent lack of DVD support in Windows 10 but several sites have recommended VLC Player as an alternative to Windows Media Player or Windows DVD Player.

Well I have tried all three players and the result is the same, i.e. nothing. My PC does not even recognise a DVD in File Explorer. Yet it will quite happily play a music CD. There is noi indication of a hardware fault in Device Manager or Windows 10's troubleshooters.

Has anyone any ideas? My PC is running a 64 bit version Windows 10 and is fully patched with the latest updates.

I have tested the DVDs on a dedicated player and they do work.

    Thanks

    Mr Morgan.

Thanks but I have just had a look at the link https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314060.

For Method 5 I do not have the relevant UpperFilters and Lower Filters settings for registry subkeys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

Methos 5 refers you to Method 6 which should not be necessary for editions of Windows 10 later than 1511. I have edition 1803.

When you say File Explorer doesn't recognise a DVD, do you mean that it doesn't even appear as a drive? It should appear in This PC. I have 1803, this is what I see in File Explorer when I put a DVD in the drive.

Put a DVD in the drive. If it appears in 'This PC' then right click on it...

Now you can choose 'Play with VLC media player' If you choose 'Open AutoPlay' you can set it to automatically play in VLC whenever you put a DVD in the drive.

I mean literally that Windows is not recognising that a DVD is present in the drive. The drive icon appears in File Explorer but that is all:

Try this free cautious repair tool, selecting only this repair:

As I said, I do not:

I also notice that if I try to access Properties, that I receive message "Properties cannot be opened. An error is preventing this key from being opened. Details: Access is denied."

I wonder if this is anything to do with the problem?

I remain mystified. Running CCLeaner over the Registry has no effect.

I do not have those filters either, 1803. Both CD audio and DVD movie show and play.
