I tried several data-DVDs. Unfortunately, the result was the same as before

Then it sounds more and more like the lasers are gone.... you mentioned you will try another drive so please let us know if that solves the issue you have....

So a DVD drive uses different lasers to read CDs and DVDs? I was not aware of this.

Right. CD uses a near IR laser (780 nm), while DVDs are read with a visible red (650 nm) laser. BluRay uses a deep violet (405 nm) laser, so if you had a BD drive, it's actually have 3 lasers present.

Even a little speck of dust can make a mes of lasers, you could try one like this first: Maxell CD-340 CD Lens Cleaner - Walmart.com

Well crap I was hoping for a fix it other than the replacement.....It just infuriates me that a dvd drive that worked before now only reads CDs. I guess I'll have to shell out that 20 bucks to get a new one.............lol

There are separate lasers for CD and DVD, one can die and other one can keep on working.
