Try creating a new user for test purposes. Log in as that user and retry.

Again, no changes. I suspect a hardware fault despite the mesages in Windows telling me otherwise.

Power down, unplug, and re-seat the cable on the MB slot. Can't hurt to try.

You could check the possibility of a hardware fault by using a USB boot disk and then seeing if it works. E.g. Kyhi's boot disk from the top of the Software and Apps section here- useful to have.

Will your DVD drive read a data disc?

Could be your drive is on its last legs and the laser is going out...... suggest you try reading a disc with data on it, both a DVD and a CD disc if you have them...

I will be looking inside the PC's box in a few days time. If no cabling issues can be found then I will install a spare DVD drive. I am assuming that the PC's software is not at fault.

    Thanks to all the respondents.

Out of curiosity...... were you able to get the data discs to open.... just another step in troubleshooting your problem...
