So just installed 10 - clean install over windows 7.
I have 2 internal harddrives - one was designated as Drive G.
But for some reason 10 removed G and so in computer mgmt I ended up redesignsting it as Drive Z.
Any way to get the letter “G” back ?
Assuming you've tried the easy way, Disk Management, and Z doesn't appear. Open admin command prompt. Type each and Enter after each
diskpart
list volume
select volume # {#=number corresponding to Z, make sure size is correct}
assign letter=G
list volume {to verify change}
I think I will leave it alone. A usb port (guessing the 5 in 1 card reader in the front of the pc is Drive G)
That would have been assigned the first available letter as you installed windows. Having used 'G' for the card reader your other drive could no longer use it, so you had to reassign it. If you want to use G again for the internal drive, just reassign the card reader to another letter (H?). Then G will be available to assign to your HDD.
Thanks. Computer Mgmt “menu” does not see the card reader as its not a drive. So guessing i would have to insert a usb into the reader, then maybe under properties change the drive letter.
As for the Z: lettering, Windows used to start assigning Networked/Mapped drives with Z: then working back up the alphabet. I have 2 NAS drives attached to my Router and it worked that way, Z: for the first one I attached then Y: for the second one I attached. The letters don't seem to be for the drives themselves but for the Public Folder on them that I mapped.
If not using Networked drives you can use Z:.
