Can not mount old Gateway Boot / File Drive in New HP

    My old Gateway failed.

Today I purchased a new HP Pavilion 570-p023w.

It sees my two USB 1 T drives straight away.

I put the old Gateway boot/ file drive a 500 gig Seagate Barracuda Sata in a Rrosewill RX308.
    external USB enclosure.

The HP does not recognize it.

What do I need to do for mounting the Gateway?

Something at the Administrative Command Line?

    H-E-L-P PLEASE.

I so need to be able to access the files on the Gateway Drive

    Thanks.

    Hi Mike

Does the disk show in Disk Management? If so you may need to assign a drive letter to the partition you are after.

A fellow at the library mounted the drive using the same enclosure so I know it works. I am trying to replicate his procedure.

The drive does not show in the partition manager or in the AOMEI Assistant. However Windows 10 beeps when I plug it into the USB port. So I am confused.

Here is the report from Disk parted.
    DISKPART> list volume

Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info

    ---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------

    Volume 0 F DVD-ROM 0 B No Media

Volume 1 C Windows NTFS Partition 118 GB Healthy Boot

Volume 2 Windows RE NTFS Partition 980 MB Healthy

    Volume 3 Z FAT32 Partition 260 MB Healthy System

Volume 4 D DATA NTFS Partition 919 GB Healthy

Volume 5 E RECOVERY NTFS Partition 11 GB Healthy

    Volume 6 G Removable 0 B No Media

Volume 6 was established in the library demonstration.

Here are the instructions he gave me.

    One last variable.
The demo ran on my Gateway. Something went wrong with it. It appears the RAM has gone faulty. I am trying to source replacement memory.

Now I am running on a brand new HP.

Thinking about this a bit more I think the G drive assignment carried over from the Gateway to HP, so the HP somehow see it?

If so then the issue becomes how to mount it?

I tried doing that in Computer Management but did not see any mounting tools,

    Then I found this page:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/disk-management/assign-a-mount-point-folder-path-to-a-drive

    Outtake
You cannot assign drive letters to boot volumes, or volumes that contain the paging file. In addition, you cannot assign a drive letter to an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) partition, EFI system partition, or any GPT partition other than a basic data partition.

It seems like discpart should show all the partitions on the external?

So I am wondering how do I get past the boot partition for accessing the data?

Are there any other paths for getting to this drive?

Do you have any non-laptop computer? Mount the drive as internal and check again. Or change external enclosure.

Could also try to connect it to USB 2 port.

Could you install minitool partition wizard, open the product and share a screen shot.

    https://www.partitionwizard.com/free...n-manager.html

How to Upload and Post Screenshots and Files at Ten Forums

When the HDD is connected is device manager reporting issues with devices, a device with an exclamation point / yellow triangle?

Another thing you could try just to see if it is your installation ( a driver issue ) create Kyhi's Recovery boot disk and boot from that. See if you can then see you disk.

I checked for the warning flag in Window Disk Management. None there.

I DO still see the folder for the G drive there and in Disk part
    from DiskPart
    Volume 6 G Removable 0 B No Media

So Windows recognizes the EXTERNAL USB drive, but not its contents.

When I disconnect the USB drive the folder goes away in all the partition managers I have tried..

I have tried other ways as I describe about but none are leading me to the files, like the fellow showed me at the library.

The mission remains discovering the missing step in this process that will reveal the files partition in the external USB drive.

This is not an issue with the brand new well+behaved HP Drive, so it does not call for a rescue disk.

But if there is a way to look at the external through a like program I am all ears. Post some links please.

I mention minitool partition and I posted link.

The rescue disk is to get a different copy of windows to see if this is a driver issue.

Failing that connect drive to another machine, copy contents off and then reinitialized disk on new machine.

And, please, try it with USB 2 port. That's the black one. On some occasions, machine are not capable to drain full power on USB 3.0.

Thanks for your responses and inputs Andre.

I get your drift for identifying / segregating a potential hardware issues,

Right now I need to put this down for a while.

I will report back when I have made some progress.
