Well its not the HD im worried about at all. Its the data. Sadly I can not back up the data. the transfer simply freezes and gets stuck at 0 transfer speed. Any suggestion on how to rescue the data at this point?
nope. there's no easy way to recover the data from a failing hard drive unless you want to take it to a data recovery service, which will cost you money (and it's not cheap). only data recovery services have proprietary & sophisticated tools to recover data from broken drives.

When dealing with drive failure it is important to make an early decision if the data is worth the cost of professional data recovery. Only you can make that decision. It is possible to literally recover a drive to death. Repeated amateur attempts at data recovery can damage the drive to the point where even professional data recovery is impossible or very expensive. If given to professional recovery earlier data recovery may have been possible at a reasonable cost. Note that reasonable is a relative term. Professional recovery is never cheap. A data recovery professional will make an early decision as what method will have the best chance of recovery at the lowest cost and the least risk of further damage. The experience to do that doesn't come easy.

Sorry I can't help with data recovery. My personal experience with such is very limited as I keep backups. I had one drive that was working fine one day but the next it wasn't even recognized by the BIOS. As all important data was backed up investigation didn't go very far.

As one whose early experience with computers (1970's) involved floppy disks as the primary form of data storage I may have an advantage over younger individuals. You learned early on that this media was not reliable and you either kept backups or you lost data. This experience carried over to modern times.

Modern drives are sufficiently reliable that most people have not experienced drive failure, yet. Many people believe that if not abused and reasonable care is taken modern drives will rarely fail. Or they intend to start making backups, but never get around to doing so.

But modern drives do fail and often without warning or apparent cause. This is typical for SSDs. There is no certainty that even professional data recovery will succeed

The best way to to ensure data is not lost is to maintain backups. This should be started before issues develop as after may be too late. All files of any value should have at least one backup copy while those of particular importance should have 2 or more backup copies. Some people have 3 or more. This may seem excessive but they rarely experience data loss.

Try making a live Linux usb flash drive or DVD. I like Linux Mint but Ubuntu is very popular also. Boot from the flash drive or dvd and try backing up your files.
