Updated drivers app will not run on Windows 10

I am looking for guidance on an issue that I have just started having again. 3 years ago I started seeing what I assume is the BSOD and after having to do a custom install of windows 10 to get to the most current version of 1803 the problem has appeared again. Yesterday and today when I have restarted my computer I get an error message that says your computer has run into a problem we are collecting information and will restart. There is what look like a upc code on the screen and I believe the message says to look at /stop code -- I am not sure if that was Microsoft.com or windows.com /stop code.

I have a Sony Vaio that was initially loaded with Windows 7 and following assistance from the windows seven forum in 2015 it was suggested to me that I upgrade to windows 10. I believe one of the solutions that was offered to me to follow was for me to uninstall and then re-install my laptop's hard drive so that is what I did. That obviously fixed the problem and I did not see the error message again for 3 years. I reached out on this forum more than a few weeks ago for assistance with my windows 10 update problem but never received a response so I contacted windows support. The windows support team instructed me to do the custom install because they said I have numerous corrupt files and there was no other option.

Because I have seen the error message that I mentioned above that I believe is the stop code error message I have tried to make sure I have the latest driver for my drive. When I download the driver updates that are referenced on the Sony website I get an error message that says the app cannot run on my PC and to contact the software publisher. I suspect that the problem is based upon the incompatibility of my computer now that it is running windows 10 and the website download is for windows 7. Is there a solution to my problem that is short of me paying Sony hundreds of dollars just to ensure I have the most current driver update? I am not certain but I believe I did try to update the driver prior to my upgrade to windows ten -- I believe the update that I downloaded said I had the most current driver for my computer. I show that I have all of the drivers on an external drive from June 24, 2015, that were located on the Sony website but they will not load on my current version of windows.

Is there anything I can do to make sure I have the most current drivers on my computer after my upgrade to windows 10?

"The windows support team instructed me to do the custom install because they said I have numerous corrupt files and there was no other option." It sounds like troubleshooting to fix the corrupt files is in order.
--- On the current drivers question, do you see any yellow or red markers in Device Manager?
--- If you are questioning your HDD, does Sony have a HDD diagnostics program?

When you upgraded to 1803, did it do so automatically or did you do that yourself?
--- If there are corrupt files, I don't see how it would have upgraded itself.

Personally I would test the HDD to ensure it is absolutely ok. If it isn't replace it.
Create install media on another PC but ensure not to include that PC's system files and perform a clean install.
More details to be included depending on your course of action.

There are a couple of yellow markers under other devices where it identifies them as unknow devices but no where else. I do not know if Sony has a HDD diagnostic program but I did run the Intel Driver Assistant.

On the Windows update issue my computer would not install the updates and I was initially stuck on version 14something. I used the windows update minitool that I saw referenced in this forum and was able to get updates for version 1607. Version 1709 was failing and giving me an error code 0x8007001F as well as continuously installing 2 of the same 1607 updates repeatedly every time the 1709 version would fail. I had to run the custom install myself after I was instructed to do so by the Microsoft support team who loaded it on my computer. I posted a couple of threads on this forum 4 weeks ago but never received a response so I felt there was no other option since I had been trying to figure it out for several months with no success.

I have run chkdsk of the HDD a few times from the elevated command and there have been no issues found. I have had other issues since I have been on version 1803 -- for example downloads to my external drives not showing up on the drive but they are in the download history. I have downloaded mp4 files that cannot be found on my external drive but will play when the external drive is connected when I go to the download history and click on the downloaded file. I have the view checked to show hidden files so I do not understand where the files can be. When I have clicked on the download to open the file after it downloads it will open the drive folder but the file is not there. I have run the chkdsk on the external drive and there have been no issues found. I was going to get another external drive to backup all the files on it and reformat the drive but there are nearly 3TB of data on it and I have to get another external drive to hold the data before I can do that.

Are there any logs I can run to determine if I have corrupted files? I was told that the custom install resolved all of my issues but I do not have much faith in the Microsoft support team. They seem to be all over the place with the assistance and I initially got the run around from them. The issues with the updates went on for weeks and they will say one thing one day about the course of action to take and then do something completely different the next time they speak with me.

My computer was initially loaded with a program called VaioCare and that was the diagnostic/performance management tool that you may be referencing. Unfortunately, following the custom install of windows version 1803 it is no longer on my computer. I have another Vaio that is the exact same model so I wonder if there is some way to load all missing components on to this computer from my other Vaio. I have gone to the Sony website to download the VAioCare app and this is what I see for the windows 10 version of that tool:

Go to the Microsoft Windows 10 Upgrade page to determine compatibility for your SVE15115FXS.

Can I install Windows 10 on this model?
Sony does not support Windows 10 for your model, however, if your computer meets the system requirements to run the Windows 10 operating system, you should be able to install Windows 10 on it. Please refer to the Microsoft Windows 10 Upgrade page for further information.

Don't I need drivers from Sony for Windows 10?
Not necessarily. Many basic system functionalities should be enabled with the drivers included within the Windows 10 operating system. Please note that Sony does not provide Windows 10 drivers for this model.

    IMPORTANT:
Drivers for other hardware components such as Network cards, etc..., may be available on the manufacturer's web site.
Sony software applications that originally shipped with the computer may not work after installing Windows 10.
Sony cannot guarantee your system capability after installing Windows 10.
WARNING: If Microsoft® states that your computer is NOT COMPATIBLE, it is strongly recommended that you DO NOT install the Windows 10 operating system.

Have you been running Windows 10 on your computer for about 3 years w/o any problems?

Please run winver and let us know what Windows 10 version you are running.
Are all of the WU's up-to-date on the version in use?
Please do not change anything unless recommended to do so.

"Are there any logs I can run to determine if I have corrupted files?"
You could run sfc /scannow for starters and see what it reports and/or fixes.

"I was told that the custom install resolved all of my issues but I do not have much faith in the Microsoft support team."
This tells me you wouldn't mind doing a clean install which I believe is your best course of action if your computer is actually able to handle Windows 10 vs. limping along.

Been running windows 10 just about exactly 3 years with no problems to the OS. I have had a problem with my computer as mentioned but it was determined to have been related to the HDD not the OS. I have windows ten on both of my Sony Vaio Laptops and I did not notice any problems until January of this year with this laptop. I saw that the updates were still automatically checking but I did not pay close attention until about February or March when I tried to check for updates -- and that is when I saw the updates had failed. By that time I was 2 versions behind on the updates because it was at version 1709.

I was working so many hours at work last year that I was not getting home until midnight most nights and getting up at 5 or 6 am for work the next day so I was not paying close attention to the computer. I was out sick with the flu in December and that is when I had time to actually use my laptop.

After the custom install I am currently at version 1803 build 17134.112.

"I have had a problem with my computer as mentioned but it was determined to have been related to the HDD not the OS"
Has it been determined yet if the HDD is a problem at this time?
CHKDSK is pretty good but it isn't a HDD diagnostic test.

Go to the HDD manufacturers website.
I haven't had to do many HDD diagnostics but You could also go to Seatools for Windows to determine the health of your drive.

I ran the Sea Tools Diagnostics and the HDD passed all of the tests so I do not believe there is a problem with the HDD. I suspect that with regards to the update problems the updates were so far behind that it caused the corruption of the files because I was not using the computer very often and was not monitoring the failed updates. Because it was set to automatically check for updates, I just relied on it being up to date and did not have the time to be more active with the laptop. However, that would have been the same with the other laptop so I cannot explain why this computer had a problem and the other Sony Vaio did not -- they are the exact same models, etc.

Unfortunately, there is no way to confirm that Microsoft support was correct about the corrupted files -- sure I can understand that would be the most logical explanation but the custom install was done the day after the support team told me to download the update package. They never tried to install the update package of version 1803 prior to recommending the custom install. That is one of the reasons that I said they would say they were going to do one thing one day but then do something else totally different instead of trying to do the thing they said they would do.

Another example is they scheduled a call with me on 6/16/18 and I was explaining the external hard drive issue I was still having that I had previously discussed a week earlier following the custom install. The support person then suggested that my HDD was out of date because he saw there was an update on the Sony website. I had already explained to him that I could not install the updates because I would get a message saying the app will not run on my computer. So he put me on a 3-way call with Sony who tried to make me pay $240 to make sure all of my drivers were up to date. Well the only driver suspected to be out of date was the HDD driver so I declined to pay the $240 and the Microsoft support person said he would call me back on 6/17/18 to follow-up. No one from Microsoft support called me on 6/17/18 so I started this thread.

I went to the Intel website and ran their driver and support assistant tool that showed the only out of date driver was my graphics driver and not the HDD driver. The tool downloaded the appropriate driver and installed it on my computer. This is just an example of why I cannot be sure of the Microsoft diagnosis of my computer because he was making his determination from a driver toolkit that I believe they put on my computer (?????). It is hard to explain my concerns about their abilities without going into detailed discussions that would make this thread too wordy so I will answer any questions directly so that others may benefit from this thread without having to feel they are reading a novel.

    Good follow-up information.

"Another example is they scheduled a call with me on 6/16/18 and I was explaining the external hard drive issue I was still having that I had previously discussed a week earlier following the custom install."
--- On the HDD diagnostics, I was thinking you were testing the OS HDD but it appears you mean the external HDD. Please verify.
--- Does the computer run ok w/o any external HDD's, USB's or other external items connected?
--- On the custom install, what process was used?
--- I'm thinking in terms of a clean install.

If you want to verify if there if there are corruption issues, start by using sfc /scannow.
There also some DISM methods to determine the health of your system
--- Check out Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image | Windows 10 Tutorials
--- I've used that on one of my Win10 computers once not because there was anything wrong with the computer but I wanted to know how it runs etc.
--- Following the procedures were easy enough to do.
--- If there any issues reported, please post the exact description of what each on of the issues are.

"I went to the Intel website and ran their driver and support assistant tool that showed the only out of date driver was my graphics driver and not the HDD driver."
--- It sounds like you graphics driver was updated properly: is that true?

--- On the HDD diagnostics, I was thinking you were testing the OS HDD but it appears you mean the external HDD. Please verify. Initially there was no issue with the external drives but as I have mentioned I cannot find my downloaded files on the external drive after the download. I have run the Sea Tools diagnostics on the OS HDD and it has not found any integrity violations.
--- Does the computer run ok w/o any external HDD's, USB's or other external items connected? Yes.
--- On the custom install, what process was used? I don't know exactly because it was setup by the Microsoft team all I did was follow the prompts and answer about 4 questions like password, wifi code, google sign in, etc.
--- I'm thinking in terms of a clean install. I don't think this is necessary now because that's pretty much what was done except I was not supposed to lose any of my files. I lost all of my apps after the install as they informed me that I would and there was no backup done prior to the install.

If you want to verify if there if there are corruption issues, start by using sfc /scannow. I just ran this and there were no violations found.

--- It sounds like you graphics driver was updated properly: is that true? Yes.
