    All excellent answers, thank you.
I'd like to recommend you create a USB Recovery drive
Create Recovery Drive in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials
and include Backup system files to the recovery drive.
--- Also create system image backup since the computer is in excellent shape.
--- If you ever need it, you will not loose any of your apps that I know of.
--- Develop a plan to do so on a scheduled basis.
--- To each his own, but I do mine on a monthly basis during the last week of the month.
--- The intent is to do so before the upcoming month's WU's which I always ensure are up-to-date.

Then I suppose you want to move on to the external HHD or something else issues.
Please let us know what you'd like to accomplish.

I'd like to recommend you create a USB Recovery drive
Create Recovery Drive in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials
and include Backup system files to the recovery drive. So I take it that this is different from a USB Recovery drive when you are downloading the Windows 10 install package that gives you that option, correct? Because I have done that on a 16GB USB and it took up about 4GB and I am pretty sure it did not included backup system files.
--- Also create system image backup since the computer is in excellent shape. I still have to reinstall the apps that were lost during the custom install, so am I correct in assuming that this step would be done after I have reinstalled those missing apps?
--- If you ever need it, you will not loose any of your apps that I know of. Is this explained in the tutorials so that I do not lose the apps that I must reinstall? Is it possible that the apps are still in one of my older system backups that I ran a couple of months ago? Because I am fairly certain it is on one of my external drives but would that also mean the files would be corrupted again if I tried to restore from my older backup images? I am concerned because when I tried to do a backup of my computer about a month ago the backup failed because it said I need an additional 500GB but when I started the backup I had about 1.5TB of free space so it made no sense to me that I got that message. This is one of the additional issues that I would like to address as you indicated in your statement below regarding other things I would like to accomplish.
--- Develop a plan to do so on a scheduled basis. I will do that and I agree monthly makes more sense -- in this process I noticed that the backup drive has an image file so if I have to do a restore from backup does this mean the OS restores the files but I cannot actually open a file from the backup location unless the drive is attached to the proper computer?
--- To each his own, but I do mine on a monthly basis during the last week of the month. OK.
--- The intent is to do so before the upcoming month's WU's which I always ensure are up-to-date. I will review the Create Recovery Drive in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials and learn how to do this without losing my reinstalled apps.

Then I suppose you want to move on to the external HHD or something else issues. Yes, I do not understand why this is happening because I have run the Sea Tools diagnostic app on my 4TB external drive with the long generic process (it took more than a day to run) and it passed with no issues so I am certain the HDD is not the problem.

Please let us know what you'd like to accomplish. Definitely, the external HDD issue and the failed backup I mentioned above.

I do that for people as a minimum item if they do not want to bother with System Image backups which is most of the time or it isn't possible to create a System Image backup at the point of time of whatever issues they are having.

What size is your internal HDD? 678GB with 241GB of free space.

    Computer: Sony/VAIO SVE15115FXS laptop. Originally Win7 upgraded to Win10 in 2015.
Version 1803 (build 17134.112) and it runs good w/o the external HDD connected.

HDD diagnostics haven’t reported any problems for both your internal (678GB with 241GB of free space) & external HDD’s.
--- What is the size of the external HDD? Is it larger than 2TB?

There hasn’t been any proof of corrupt files or BSOD issues at this time.

Device manager shows “a couple of yellow markers under other devices where it identifies them as unknow devices”
--- I’m not a driver utility person but when you have time check the free trial period of Driver Easy Free ‚Äď 3,000,000+ Users Trusted Driver Updater and see what they report.
--- If it reports a driver from a manufacturer, go to that manufacturers website and see if they have a driver and support assistant tool like Intel has.

Your graphics driver has been updated via Intel Intel’s driver and support assistant tool.

On your Win10 drivers, once you get your computer up and running properly refer to

On the system image backup, I would create one after ensuring the computer is running properly w/o having the external HDD connected and all windows updates are up-to-date.
Then Install your apps and create another system image backup before moving on to connect the external HDD.

HDD diagnostics havenít reported any problems for both your internal (678GB with 241GB of free space) & external HDDís.
--- What is the size of the external HDD? Is it larger than 2TB? I have 2 external HDDs both are 4TB. One of them has 1.45TB of free space the other 394GB of free space. The one with the 394GB of free space has backup files for both of my SONY Vaio computers and there are multiple images from May 2018 for this Sony Vaio on it. I believe one of the images -- the most recent on May 27, 2018 is the one that failed because it said I did not have enough free space on the external HDD. That is why I was asking the question about whether the apps on the computer would be on one of those backup images -- I am not sure if that is part of the process or whether it makes sense to try to restore the files on this computer since they were reported to be corrupted by Microsoft.

There hasnít been any proof of corrupt files or BSOD issues at this time. That is correct.

On a separate note I have noticed problems with the other Sony Vaio but I am sure I need to get one laptop stabilized before beginning another thread for the 2nd laptop. I have been getting exception errors and the screen went completely black, then froze so I had to power it off. Currently I am running a virus scan with Anti-Spyware's free scan tool before I go through the other processes. I was running the SeaTool Diagnostice on the Internal HDD when that app kept crashing prior to completing the long generic test -- it had passed all other tests prior to the problems I just mentioned. This is just a fyi since I am sure you do not want to combine both problem computers in a single thread.

On the first external 4TB HDD with only 394GB of free space that has backup files and multiple images from May 2018 on the Sony/VAIO SVE15115FXS laptop of this thread, it sounds to me like you would like to be able to recover your apps onto your internal HDD, I am not aware if that is possible. Personally, I would wipe it clean or restore it to it’s original setup from the manufacturer’s website.
--- Someone else with more experience than me might have methods to address what needs to be done.

On the 2nd Sony Vaio that has been getting exception errors, the screen went completely black, then froze & and had to be powered off but includes the second external 4TB HDD that has 1.45TB of free space with backup files for that laptop, I believe you are correct: save those issues for another thread once the above computer & associated external HDD are in order.
