    Updates on old laptop

I have an old Gateway laptop computer, see specification below, that I still use as a reserve machine having suffered multiple problems with Windows 10 on my everyday machine. Those problems thankfully now seem to have been sorted out. I appreciate that W10 strains the specification for my Gateway. GATEWAY MT6839bINTEL CORE 2 CPU T5300 @ 1.73GHzRAM 2GB64-BIT OS, X64 BASED PROCESSORWINDOWS 10 PRO UPDATE KB4021701The reason for this post is that for update KB4134662 installed on 10th June I had serious problems with the Gateway. The principle one was that I could not use the internet. I tried all the trouble shooting options without success. I checked the Device Manager settings and found that several devices had errors. The previous version of W10 was working well; I had already spent around 1 hour trying to fix problem, I did not want the hassle of finding new drivers if they existed. In other words I was well and truely pi..ed off!I then went back to the previous build. That operation took place efficiently and I had a reserve machine again. I take security on the internet very seriously and I therefore want to ensure as far as possible that I have the most up-to-date security features on my machines. My question IS THERE A WAY OF ONLY INSTALLING THE SECURITY PARTS OF WINDOWS UPDATES without 3d modeling, Cortana and all the other bumf that forms part of W10??? If so can some one please explain how to do so.Regards Terry Green

    Terry,

"I did not want the hassle of finding new drivers if they existed" - did you try rolling back the drivers in Device manager?

I know of no method for avoiding the rubbish within new Windows versions but I avoid my drivers being overwritten by setting all my network connections to metered and disallowing device updates over metered connections [Settings, Devices].

Why are you running a 64bit o/s with only 2 gig ram this may give problems as a 64 bit o/s will only run signed drivers and they may not be available for an old pc a 32 bit you dont have that problem

I was not aware I could roll back drivers. I will try if problem with next update. Having rolled back W10 I see that my Mass Storage Controller has an error. However Roll Back is not active; other options such as driver details are. Laptop is working fine for my reserve needs so I will leave as is for now.

I will change network settings and wait and see for next with next update.

There are TenForums tutorials for that...

Set Wireless Network as Metered or Non-Metered in Windows 10

Set Ethernet Connection as Metered or Unmetered in Windows 10

    Polterry,

I should also have mentioned the other way of avoiding having drivers overwritten so you could choose the one that best suited you.

The second method [which I used successfully for several months before settling on the metered connections method]
    Start,
    Windows system, Control panel,
Set the View by in the upper right to Small icons,
    System,
    Advanced system settings,
    Hardware tab,
    Device installation settings,
    No,
then there are a few save/OK buttons to click.

If you are happy to have automatic Windows [software] updates then this method is better for you.

If you never want Windows update to run automatically then setting all your network connections to metered is a core step. This necessarily involves you in regularly deciding to check for updates yourself.
