Sound problem
When I go control panel\sound\sounds\critical stop\test. I hear nothing.
When I search *.wav some of the .wavs work. When I run .wmv movies they all work.
When there is sound on a webpage I hear it.

There are these two tutorials by Brink on sounds
Windows system sounds.
One other thing to check is the sound mixer. Right click on sound icon in Notification area, then "Open Volume Mixer" and check that Systems sounds is not muted and is turned up sufficiently to be heard.
