    Stereo Mix no longer appears.

    Windows 1803 (OS Build 17134.48)

The machine was recently returned from an IT company who removed a corrupt update because it refused to boot up.

I now find that Stereo Mix is not showing up in the audio windows which opens on right clicking the 'speaker icon on the taskbar.

    This is what is displayed:

    And this is Volume Mixer:

There's no corresponding window for Recording devices.

I have no idea what has happened. Can anyone help me to resolve this problem please?

What happens when you click open sound settings? It should be there under input or for further tweaking, other sound options > app volume and device preferences.

Mine is exactly the same as yours. You can see recording devices and playback under "Sound" in the Control Panel.

Ah, yes it is. Thank you.

In Other sound options > Sound control panel. the window with Playback and Recording tabs opens up. They should be available when I right click the 'speaker icon in the task bar, but they aren't.

What can I do so that they appear through that (normal) route?

Not sure, I think Microsoft is trying to sweep all the settings to the settings app. Personally, I don't like it, but I didn't make the OS.

Right-click the speaker icon and select "Sounds".

    Could well be.

I suspect that it might have happened when the (subsequently removed) corrupt update was installed. Unfortunately there are no restore points predating that.

    Thank you, that's brilliant !

Then if you want a decent EQ check Posts 20-21 in this thread:

Here is one explanation of what is happening, from the makers of VBCable:
How To: Install - On Windows 10

If you had Stereo Mix on the PC before, and now it has disappeared (Not hidden, can't be Enabled) you can sometimes restore it with a Registry fix like this:
SOLVED: Enabled in Conexant HD Audio in Windows 10 - Audio and Video

As pointed out in the first article, Stereo Mix is a feature contained in the sound chip Driver. So sometimes in order to get it back you have to experiment with using older drivers. Sound chip manufacturers are removing the feature is some newer drivers. I service a certain Toshiba laptop where the feature is permanently locked out in the chip firmware.

I believe all of this is due to copyright infringement issues. The manufacturers and MS have been threatened with suits and are taking the easy way out.

    Thank you TV2

    I read something similar before.

But I've got it now, albeit through an additional click after the 'speaker icon.

I struggled for a long while to get it on on to a Windows 7 machine, but got there in the end.

I sometimes need it for Cool Edit Pro to work.
