Windows 10: Stereo Mix no longer appears.

I'm a bit late to this thread but I only just found a solution to a very similar problem - the machine in question is actually running 1803 Build 17134.167.

It has a Realtek High Definition on-board "sound card" and I found that when I tried to use my VERY old but likeable Wave Repair software, whereas before the update to 1803 everything worked, after the update I got error messages when I tried to record. I played around with all sorts of drivers and configurations for many hours, but finally found the issue, which makes no sense to me but is a repeatable fix.

Note that I hadn't had occasion to use Wave Repair for quite a while, so I'm not exactly sure whether it was the update to 1803, or another subsequent CU that caused the problem. I know it was all working in 1709 (OS Build 16299.431) and the next time I tried it was, as I said, in 1803 (OS Build 17134.167)

Anyway, at some time after the update to 1803, if I tried to record from the audio stream playing on the PC (NOT a microphone) I got this:

Now, habitually, I set all my Privacy options in Windows locked down as securely as I can which means OFF in most cases!

I tried another (free) sound mixer program and got similar error messages. Note that all the while I could listen to the sounds, just couldn't record them!

    SOLUTION

In Windows 10 1803 (OS Build 17134.167) and possibly before, the sound card is not accessible for recording UNLESS

Settings > Privacy > Microphone is set as follows:

How to Allow or Deny OS and Apps Access to Microphone in Windows 10

Microphone access for this device is ON - originally I had it switched OFF
Allow apps to access your microphone is ON originally I had it switched OFF
All the "apps which can access your microphone" may be turned OFF unless you know you use them.

    Now looks like this:

This allowed Wave Repair to work correctly exactly as it had before the update to 1803.

No I hadn't but I followed a very similar, tortuous path to eventually get where I am now - in other words to get a perfectly good working PC working again - thank you MS!!!

To be fair, my problem was related, but different, inasmuch as driver-wise, I started off with Realtek drivers, went to MS generic ones and eventually ended up with the latest version of the Realtek ones!

So mine was NOT a driver issue as such, but all such information is useful.

One comment of yours struck a chord "It's all so damned irritating. I know it can be done but I haven't found out how again"

    You got that right!

    Luckily, we now both have!

    @VBF,
I couldn't, even if I wanted to - not an admin, just just an ordinary poster like you. Can't speak for Brink, though
