    No headphone out?

Okay so I just tried to plug in some headphones to the back of my computer and I realized that apparently it doesn't have a headphone output. There are 3 jacks in the back: Line in, Line out and Microphone in. Line out does seem to work but I think that's intended to be used with an amplifier so the sound is really quiet. According to the Windows audio manager and Realtek HD audio there's a front panel with a headphone jack but I don't see any other audio jack in my computer. Does anyone know why this is? Is my motherboard not set up correctly?

Usually, the mic/headphone jacks for front panel are next to or close to the USB ports. You specs say it's custom built. By you, or someone else?

Hiding behind a little spring flip door?

I might know what the problem is. The computer was not built by me initially, I made some changes to it over time but the motherboard has stayed the same (the computer used to belong to somebody else, don't worry it's not stolen :P). At some point there was a short circuit with the front USBs. The case has 2 somewhat hidden USB slots and a headphone/mic jack but they're empty.

Since the headphone jack is recognized by the computer, it probably still works, right? Is it just not connected to the case?

The system is recognizing the capabilities of the audio card. It can't see if the wires are connected or not. Not trying to be funny..... The jacks themselves are "passive", meaning they are just extensions of the wires to the card via the MB. Can you get in there and repair?

Usually, the color code for audio out is green. Not sure if the ports in the back that you are talking about are color coded. Usually, PCs have audio jacks in the front and back. Tne one in the back is straight from mobo and one in front is connected to the mobo via cable headers.

According to what he said, they are not connected. Some short-circuit problem...probably never reconnected. He's looking.

Alright so I just checked it out and there are a couple of cables which aren't connected to anything. One of them says "USB" on so I'd assume that's them.

So is there anything I can do about this? Or will I have to wait until I get a new motherboard?
