I do a lot of traveling and have been using an EHD to shuttle files between my laptop and desktop machine (laptop -> EHD -> Desktop -> EHD -> laptop).
Is there equipment that would allow connection to both machines through USB ports to eliminate the need for an EHD (laptop <-> desktop)?? I'm assuming that I would need to create a partition on my laptop and map it to a drive letter not on my desktop.

If you have a typical home network set up - a router and modem for connecting to the internet - and both PCs are connected to the network, then you can set up the PCs to share files and folders on both. Then it is just a matter of moving data back and forth between both as you will.
If this sounds like what you want to do, people here can help you get that set up.
The real simple and effective way is to use Google drive or Onedrive you save your files the their folder and within seconds they are up in the cloud safe when you login to the desktop they are there as is by magic. Its trouble free and works

In addition to the method of networking them together, it is also very easy to direct connect, thru USB, 2 computers. Depending on how much data you have to transfer back and forth, this can be much. much faster and less error prone. A female-female short USB cable is all you need and a quick connection setup. Quick Youtube vid on the process...looks very simple to do.

Quantity is the operative word here. I'm trying to avoid buying additional cloud storage. The primary file that I'm working from is currently 18GB and I don't think any of the "trial" storage options of the common cloud options offer this capacity. I'll look at tomcat's suggestion and see if that works for me.

Direct usb to usb connection can only be done using special usb interface cables.
Using normal usb to usb cables can fry PCs ports, mobos, or worse cause a fire!
Either just do it via router network sharing , or ad-hoc network as below.
You can safely connect two pcs - ethernet port to ethernet port to create an adhoc network.

Shared Drives on one pc can now be seen by other (you will have to setup required drives as a network share).
AD-HOC connection is typically much faster than via router if using wifi.
Any ethernet cable will do - need to use crossover ethernet cable died out years ago (unless using really old devices).

Yeah - I know - my warning was for ysing normal cables. I did it once as an experiment and cable heated very quickly. Fortunately no damage as I removed it immedit.@cereberus
