Epson Scan Crashes - Epson Perfection V700 Scanner

I have an Epson Perfection V700 Photo scanner and have not had any previous trouble with Windows 10. Recently Epson Scan started to crash. This happens when I click on any window outside the Epson scan interface and then click back into Epson scan. Then a blue circle starts turning forever. I have to close Epson scan using the task manager or by right clicking Epson scan in the taskbar/close and Windows will send an error report.

1- I have uninstalled the Epson Scan software and reinstalled the latest driver from the Epson Website for Win 10 64 bit.
2- I have tried to roll back to an earlier graphics card driver.
I have tried using a different USB cable plugged into a different port.

So far the problem continues. I suspect the problem could be due to the latest Windows feature update or maybe the Graphics card driver could be to blame.

Any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot this problem would be appreciated.

    Kind regards
    Chris.

Thank you very much for this information. This appears to be the problem I am facing. I installed the Windows 1803 update in May when the problems started. So I can see I have some choices. Either I can wait for Epson to update the driver or Microsoft to fix the problem or I can downgrade Windows to the older version. In the meantime its still possible to scan as long as I do not click outside the scanner interface window.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Kind regards
    Chris.

Another option would seem to be to use Vuescan (not free).

Have you tried the built in Windows Fax & Scan option? Turn it on under Windows Features / Print & Document Services.

Also try the Windows Scan App.

I coaxed an old Epson Perfection 1200 to work in Windows 10 - see How to Install Old Epson Perfection 1200 Scanner in Windows 10. Epson scan doesn't work properly unless I run it in admin mode - have you tried that?

Thanks Dalchina and Steve for your suggestions. Vuescan is quite a good professional programme but its not free. Windows scan does work but its not practical because so many of the settings and options I need are missing. Epson scan is ideal for my needs. Hopefully Epson or Microsoft will fix the bug in a future update.

Steve, I just tried running Epson scan as administrator and so far so good. I tried a couple of scans and clicked in some different windows and then went back to Epson scan and it did not crash. I will do some more testing and let you know how I get on. Thanks again!

    Kind regards

I can confirm this occurs on seemingly all Epson scanners that use the original Epson Scan (which in my opinion is still the easiest especially for scanning negatives and films since it auto-crops etc). I have tried V300, v600 and V700. Epson Scan has not technically been updated since 2009, which is a problem. The new "Epson Print & Scan" app from the Windows store is a complete joke and lacks every feature including the ability to set save location, image format or anything above 300 DPI.

Setting the program to Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode will generally solve the crashing, but that causes other fatal problems (e.g., if you use the "Browse" to set a save location the options dialog will never close and the program still must be terminated). Process Explorer indicates that DWM crashes at the same time Epson does, which is relating to the Windows visual composition features that can't really be disabled in Windows 10.

I am experimenting with running as admin + "disable fullscreen optimizations" + "Windows 7" compatibility. It seemed to be working OK for multiple scans including when minimizing, restoring and so forth. But after closing and reopening it crashed again as always (and when it does you see a small Epson window flicker at the bottom-left, sometimes it rises all the way to the top of the screen and then back down before everything locks up).

According to others who have contacted Epson they have escalated the matter since it affects most of their products. Yet they haven't really updated the Epson Scan software in many years so I'm skeptical if they'll be the ones to push out an update but i hope so. I work with some non-profits in the historical/archiving sector and they have been affected by this since applying the Windows 10 update.

Thanks for your comments Matt. I am using Epson scan For Win 10 64 bit version 3.921 dated 26 July 2013. My scanner is the Epson perfection V700. Epson scan suits all my needs.

The instructions say not to install in compatibility mode which was OK before the Windows 1803 update. Your experience may differ.

I have configured the shortcut to run as administrator and so far have had no crashes with the latest Windows 1803 update (Right click/Shortcut tab/Advanced/check run as administrator). I also received a reply from Epson support saying the Windows 1803 update affected most of their products and they were working hard to solve the issue.

Hopefully Epson will come up with a solution soon.

PS Also Epson TWAIN worked fine with Windows 7 but does not work with Windows 10 when scanning into CorelDraw 18 which crashes. Its a shame but I can live without it. Instead I have to copy and paste the scans into CorelDraw 18. I hope an updated driver can also solve the TWAIN issue.

PPS. Matt, if you are using auto cropping of negs with Epson scan I discovered there are 3 different settings. The default setting (Small) crops quite a bit of the outside of the neg which is not ideal in every situation. I prefer the middle setting which goes up to the edge of the negative. The large setting goes beyond that. You can find the settings If you click the configuration button/preview/Thumbnail cropping area.

That confirms my decision to defer feature updates and not get 1803 just yet.

Very good information, Chris. I was unaware that the crop settings were different but this would explain why in the past I've noticed some negatives lacking some of the original content. I have experimented with commercial products including VueScan but find the amount of manual setup especially relating to the cropping to match the Epson inserts more tedious than desirable.

The original Epson Scan Utility is still one of the better solutions in my opinion when using these dedicated scanners. Although there are some frustrating aspects like quirks in saving presets and being unable to save more than 999 images to any given folder with the default naming system, the ease of use and optional advanced configuration is convenient.

I know that Epson has come out with a series of related scan apps since then (including "Epson Scan 2" which I can't seem to even locate for download anymore), but they have all been severely lacking in usability and configuration. The official Windows Store app is ludicrous Epson Scan Crashes - Epson Perfection V700 Scanner-untitled-4.jpg so I hope this one can be restored to perfectly functional order with an update from Windows or Epson.

P.S. For anyone interested including Epson/Microsoft in troubleshooting this... I've found through additional testing that even when in Administration mode the crashing symptom can be replicated every time by opening Task Manager, selecting "More Details" under Processes, expanding EPSON Scan (32-Bit), then right-clicking on the "Epson Scan" process and selecting "Bring to Front". This will cause the small title bar window to flicker in the bottom-left and cause the app to freeze.

So the problem appears to stem directly from restoring focus of the Epson Scan software.
