Repurpose a DVR HDD in a PC

I have a 500GB sata HDD from a replaced TIVO box that Virgin didn’t want back, which I plan to use in my PC. I Have searched for a procedure, one suggestion was to use Gparted to boot then after some selections swopping the boot disk for a HDAT2 boot disk...but someone else said that booting with UBCD. Should work. Two theories persist, one is that the HDD is Linux based, the other that the config is set for DVR operation and needs to be changed I.e. .disabling power-in-standby mode......not recognised At All in windows..

any ideas please

It really doesn't matter which format it was on it, only thing that matters is interface compatibility. There's no such thing as Linux only HDD. You can just format it to NTFS and it has to work in windows too.

Sorry bit confused......the HDD des not show in windows, does not even power up, so I assume it’s the DVR HDD config that requires a special signal from the DVR to power up....so that must be what needs changing, just wondered my best option to achieve this

Some pvr dvds are firmware/hardware locked to pvr and cannot be used on a pc. Also drives are often built to a lower reliability standard (ie cheap and nasty) to keep pvr costs down.

Does it appear under diskpart?
Have you tried third party disk management software - say EaseUS partition manager?

Doesn’t show under either....

And in BIOS and/or Device manager ?

when I first decided to format my retired DVR HDD I found out that it had a special config to stop,powering up without a special command sent from the DVR...

from that point on my research search went deeper and deeper and further away from the real truth.....the internet is a great place to get misdirected get misinformation, basically led down the garden path...

any way it transpires that my PC didn’t recognise the DVR HDD as it was plugged into a USB port ( why didn’t I think of that ?) also the adapter used only works with 2.5” drives.....again I completely forgot this simple point...

so so when I finally decided t stop searching the internet and use my brains, I unplugged an internal HDD and plugged the DVR HDD in, immediately storage manager informed me the drive needed initialising, one mouse click later and it was ready, a quick format , just in case and job done.....

someasy it’s easy to get misdirected on the internet.......whatever you search for rightly or wrongly someone else did the same and so the journey down the garden path begins...

i love the internet, but virtually nothing false is ever removed or amended.......oh well lesson learnt...
