How to use headset with mic

i just bought a headset which has a built in mic (one you can plug and unplug from the left earcup) and i can't figure out how to use it. i plug it into one audio jack and i only get the audio (not the mic) another one, and i get the mic and not the audio.
    am i being stupid?

Look at TS/TRS/TRRS/TRRRS: Combating the misconnection epidemic by Allan Tépper - ProVideo Coalition - does your headset have a TRRS plug?

If so, then it's possible your PC doesn't support that type of plug and you'll have to get an adapter to split it into separate headphone and mic jacks, such as https://www.amazon.com/CablesOnline-.../dp/B00N03ZYUU

The fact that both the mic and headphones don't work simultaneously when you plug the headset in shows that your PC probably doesn't support it. TRRS jacks are common on phones, tablets, and laptops but I don't know if any desktop motherboards have them.

Yes, you'll need to get an adapter.
