Please go to Device manager and see if you have any yellow triangles and expand display adapters and tell me what they are listed as. You should only have 1, your graphics card. But, with the way you are having to start up, it may have both which can cause problems.
No yellow triangles and only my gpu in display adapters.
Also running the latest bios for my gpu 84.00.41.00.90
Edit: I think I forgot to mention I had the exact same issue on 2 identical motherboards.
You have tried 2 motherboards, 2 graphics cards Correct? Have you tried a different set of ram and a different power supply? Preferably ram from a different manufacturer? Have you done a clean install? Have you tried a cold boot with 1 stick of ram? Then try it with a different set in another ram slot? Remove all ram and try to start it up. I know it won't start but it should beep like crazy. That should let you know the motherboard is doing what it should do. Are you certain you have no bent CPU Pins?
Yup 2 motherboard both the same, a gtx770 and 980ti. I haven't tried a different set of ram as I'm running Paul's old kit which is known to be working. I have tried booting with 1 stick of ram and then 1 in the other slot(done with both sticks). And yeah it beeps like crazy with no ram, I only know this because when test 1 stick it wasn't seated properly.
Edit: Yeah done a clean install. I haven't tried a different psu as I don't have one unless I pull the Mrs's pc apart. I'm going to be buying a 1080ti in the next week so will see what happens then.
Edit:2 Yup I checked for broken pins with a torch and magnifying glass. I even tried it with the cpu installing bracket and without.
I've never tried it. But, hold down the windows key and press the R key, type msconfig into the box. Go to the boot tab and check safe boot. It will tell you to restart. Don't restart, shut down. Wait a few minutes as usual and try to boot up and see if it will boot into safe mode.
Yes, it will work. I just tried it. Just be sure to go back and uncheck the safe boot before rebooting again.
Done! and got the same result it hung on the enter bios screen with the gpu post light lit. I've found that I don't need to completely remove the gpu to boot but just disconnect the cables and connect to the on board and it will boot fine.
I said it was a weird one didn't I
