Done both chap a number of times. I've just noticed that there is a newer bios so I'll grab that now and see how it goes.
    Cheers chap

Latest bios flashed and opt defaults set. I'll now shut down for a few minutes and see how it goes. Voltages in bios were fine when I checked them before but will note them down in a minute.

Edit: Thanks for the suggestion Grom but it's already been done a few times

Ryan, clearing CMOS is not a bad idea. It would seem that some info in there is wrong, so lets get rid of it and start over.

I am also thinking that the CMOS Battery may be bad. If you can reboot with no problems means that the bios is remembering the data, but the power is never completely removed for any amount of time on a reboot. When you shut down and remove the power is when you have the problems. That is not a diagnosis just really 'thinking out loud'.

That was something I forgot to mention.... I had tried multiple new batteries and clearing the cmos at least 20 times.

I'd just shut down and although slow it booted to Windows so I'm thinking I didn't leave it long enough. I'll shut down again and take the dog for a quick walk and try again. It's a right head scratcher

No change chaps.. start up, post and hang on enter bios screen, shut down and remove gpu, boot with on board graphics and shut down. Install gpu and then it boots fine.

Yes chap restarts are fine it's just the cold boot that it has trouble.
Have you tried turning off Fast Start-up? Restart doesn't use it, but starting up after a Shut down isn't truly a cold start if Fast Start-up is turned on.

I think I did with the first motherboard but will try it again.

    Also voltages in the bios are fine. 3.3 = 3.312. 5v = 5.040 and +12 = 12.096
