Devices "Friendly Names" restored to defaults at every restart

    I'm using Window 10 Pro 64-bit 1709.

I've renamed my sound devices using the "FriendlyName" registry key method (the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001 key).

However, they get restored to the ugly defaults after each restart.

Can anyone suggest how to make this change permanent? I've thought of disabling system permissions for those keys, but it just doesn't seem right for me...
