IBM Microdrive - any readers that can still handle those

    Hi folks,

I've found about 6 old IBM microdrives with what I imagine are some old photos on them.

Any type of older card readers that could still handle these as I'm curious on those old pictures.
I've long since disposed of the cameras that could handle this type of device (Canon D30, D60, Mk II etc).

I'm sure there must be some old pro photographers out there or dedicated / serious amateurs who used these types of cameras and the devices - I'll bet some of these will still beat any quick taken "snapshot" with a mobile phone "camera" !!!. even if the resolution isn't as great.

    Cheers

You can buy adapters for them still - see this example on Amazon UK.

I still have an adapter to read them in PCMCIA card slots but only my very oldest computer [2005] has one.

    Hi there

@Try3 (do you like Rugby BTW !!!!).

    ordered from Amazon S.A.R.L (Luxembourg)

I really want to see what's on those old photos -- pre-millennium !!!!

Marked thread as solved and repped you + 1

Those old cameras also handled CF (compact flash -- the Microdrive was compatible but slightly fatter -- your device apparently will read them OK and space is big enough for you to slide the IBM Microdrive into).

    Cheers

    Jimbo,

I also found the CF cards & IBM Microdrives [including cheap clones] to be interchangeable in the PCMCIA adapter, camera & Psion 7.

All I have left now is the PCMCIA adapter & 2 unbranded CF cards [8MB & 250MB] that can be used when I boot my oldest computer into XP [I normally use it with Win10 but that just does not want to know them]. Your new adapter should not have that problem because it will have a modern driver. I imagine that I could play around and find a driver for Windows 10 but I have long since run out of uses for these cards. I can remember being amazed in 2000 that such a small card could have 250MB on it.

    BTW - no.

here's a US$12 item from Newegg that presents itself as a "68-in-1" USB 2.0 card reader. Beats anything else on the market for antique flash-based media. SABRENT CRW-UINB 68-in-1 USB 2.0 Internal Card Reader wVISTA - Newegg.com.
