See if you can use Device Manager to reinstall the old sound card driver. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers", right-click the sound device, select "Update driver", "Browse my computer for driver software", then "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer". If one is found, install it. You may need to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

Already did that Ben. I have the latest drivers. For the moment I reverted to version 1709 and have no problems. Maybe I will try MCT when I am certain I can keep my programs and files.

Right-click the speaker icon in the lower right corner, select "Recording devices", double-click the microphone, click "Advanced", and uncheck the box marked "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device". Then click "OK".
