Upgrade i3-3120 to i7-4700mq in Laptop
I have a laptop that is running an i3-3120 chip right now. Can I upgrade it to an i7-4700mq chip?
Thanks in advance,

No. They use different sockets (G2 vs G3) so the i7 won't fit. Not to mention the PCH and other motherboard components that would be incompatible.
i3 3120M is a processor from the Ivy Bridge architecture while the i7 4700MQ is a processor from the Haswell architecture.
And no you cannot upgrade as there is no upgrade path for it.
The most powerful CPU listed as provided with the Lenovo E531 was the i7-3632QM. (Socket G2.)
Whether the swap would be possible, I have no idea.
The real questions are; if you find a cpu that is upgradable, will the performance increase/gain be significant enough to warranty the upgrade and will it be cost effective to do so. Meaning, would it be cheaper to purchase a new laptop with the latest cpu.
