    Tomseys,

I've downloaded the Realtek HD audio, run the install twice with no effect.

Regarding the steps suggested above, yes.
Issues as I've gone along are: (sorry for big bits of quoted test)

"try using the generic audio driver that comes with Windows. Here's how:
Open Device Manager, right-click (or press and hold) your audio driver > Update driver software... > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, select High Definition Audio Device, select Next, and follow the instructions to install"

There is NO HD audio device present to select.

    "
Open Start, enter Sound, select it from the list of results. On the Playback tab, select a device, then Set Default."

The only thing I can get to here is to the control panel which takes me straight to the speakers, (Intel SST audio device WDM). There's no "Sound" in the Start section.

"On the Playback tab, right-click (or press and hold) the Default Device, and then selectProperties. On the Advanced tab, under Default Format, change the setting, and then retest your audio device. If that doesn't work, try changing the setting again."

The default format pulldown is greyed out - you can't change it. Its set at 16bit, 48000Hz

Do these missing/unchangeable bits shed any light?

What's your exact model Acer laptop/computer? What's the sound card on it?

Wish I could be more help. This is one problem I have never experienced. Maybe someone else here can help guide you to a fix with this.

Tomseys, thanks for your help - I'm coming to the conclusion this is far from simple!

It's an Acer Aspire SW3-013. When I look in Device Manager for Sound, video and game controllers there are two things present: Intel SST Audio Device and Realtek I2S Audio Codec. Nothing else. No HD Audio etc. Everything worked like a charm until I had to do a re-install of Win10 to get the 1709 version in place.

Looks like your laptop has intel HD integrated graphics. Seems like it originally came with Windows 8.1 32 bit.

Question: Did you update to a 32 bit version of Windows 10? Seems like your system is 32 bit.

Added: I believe the Platform Drivers: "Master Installer (BIOS 1.10 + Platform driver included)" and updating to it is mentioned a time or two in the Acer support forum (see below) with regards to fixing things not working after win 10 update:
