    Try checking the S.M.A.R.T. status.
Easiest way to check those value is with Crystal Disk Info. Crystal Dew World upper left blue box. Example:

Looks like the FE2004 doesn't have any way to give it extra power, pity. I suspect the chromebook cannot provide sufficient power for that particular hard drive. It may be able to provide more power if you try it with its charger plugged in.

You may also find that a PC can provide sufficient power. If it works when plugged into a PC but not when used with the chromebook then lack of power is the most likely cause. I'd also run a disk check if it works in the PC in case the problem with the chromebook has caused any file system errors.
Hi there. I had the charger plugged in when i did this. Same issue.

I plugged it into windows computer and it does recognize it. It was connect to windows 7 desktop etc.

If that is the case, why is it when i plugged in an external hard drive it worked?

I connected the seagate 1tb external hard drive and it recognized it fine.

I did use that crystal program. It showed the health as good. Or do you have to pay attention to the numbers?

i did recall when i plugged it into windows 7 desktop, it had to check for sectors and there were like over 200 million etc.

but everytime i connect it to windows laptop, it recognizes it.

I prefer the Portable App version, no install required.

But to run Crystal Disk Info you'd need to use a PC, and if the problem is as I suspect the power requirements it's likely to work perfectly in a PC.

Sound increasingly like insufficient power. Which Chromebook do you have?

I can find no reports of the Acer Chromebook 14 having low power on its usb ports. The Acer has two usb ports, have you tried the drive in both?

Hi there i just tried it right now. It does work on the other usb port. I only have 2 usb ports on the chromebook. The top usb port i had plugged in the usb for the wifi mouse i use.

So what does that mean? That the other usb port is damaged? Right now i connected the usb for my wireless mouse to the usb port where it could not connect/recognize on my laptop.

I did not want to do this earlier in case it might damage the usb for my wireless mouse.

As I understand it, one of the usb ports on the Chromebook can be used to charge it. This may account for why one works and the other doesn't.

Im confused what do you mean by that.

Because that 2nd usb port has no issues with a usb stick or a 1tb external hard drive connected to it. It recognizes it with no issue. But this internal hard drive enclosure, it works on the usb port on the top. The one right under it, it does recognize it for a second and then the blue light immediately turns off and you have those error messages i posted above.
