Is my 2TB USB 3.0 external portable drive too slow?

I bought a Seagate Expansion 2 TB USB portable drive. While populating it with data I noticed that the transfer speed was about 31 MB/s on average.

My PC is about 7 years old and has a 2-port USB card in it. The external drive is connected to it via a USB 3.0 hub.

1. Isn't this speed rather slow?

2. Is there any (free) software that I could use to test the read/write speed?

3. In Device Manager under "Disk drives" the portable drive is described as a SCSI device. Is this correct? I have an other USB drive connected to the PC on the other USB port (but not a portable drive) and it's described as a "USB device" in Device Manager.

31 MB/S looks more like USB2 speed. But again speed also depends on file type you are copying. It's best to try with a large media file (ex: movie file) and see the speed. I use a little freeware program called "USB Device Tree Viewer". You can get it from this link.
just run the program and on the right pan look for "bcdUSB". It will tell you if your device is working under USB2 or 3. There are other useful information that will help you troubleshoot.

Normal speed for the USB 2 port. To get faster Data transfer you could look at installing a USB 3 Card into the PCIe slot. Solved: Add HP USB 3.0 card to Z and xw workstations - HP Support Forum - 5609505

Having a USB 3.0 hub means nothing if it is plugged into a USB 2.0 port. The entire transfer will go at the slowest speed along the chain.

1. That would be a typical speed for mixed file sizes. It's not slow.
2. That speed is very dependent on file size. Large files are considerably faster than a large number of small ones.

You can use a benchmark application but that only tells you the speed of benchmark tests not real use. What they do reveal however is the variation of speed with file size.
SCSI, just forget about that, it appears in my drives which are SATA, it is just a legacy/historical name/spec, like IDE, EIDE, ST506 etc.

The OP has not mentioned if his PC has USB3 support or not. Just a mention of a USB card with 2 ports. If card is USB2 then USB3 interfaces or USB3 Hob makes no difference. You get USB2 connection and speed. Some older pc's and laptops have mixed ports (2X usb2 and 2X USB3). So you need to use the right port. But in this case you should see if the card is a USB3 one or USB2. Today you can buy a USB3 card very cheap. So it's easy to replace it if it's a USB2.

A few points to clarify: My card I believe is a USB 3 card.
The USB hub on which I connected the 2 TB portable drive is a USB 3 type of hub (with 7 ports on it).
The average speed that I mentioned in my previous posting about this drive was determined when copying all sorts of files ranging from a few Megabytes to the largest one being about 400 GB.

The result you posted here are similar to what I get from my USB3 HDD and Controller. All seem to be normal. As I said earlier the speed also depends on the filetype, filesize, and folder structure. I have folders with many small files that copy at very slow speed (ex ~2MB/s). But I just copied a big MKV movie from pc to my usb hdd and the speed was 61MB/s average. According to the logs from usb tree viewer your devices are both fine and correctly detected.
Meanwhile it's a good idea to go to your usb card manufacture site and download the latest drivers available for the device.

A few points to clarify: My card I believe is a USB 3 card.
The USB hub on which I connected the 2 TB portable drive is a USB 3 type of hub (with 7 ports on it).
The average speed that I mentioned in my previous posting about this drive was determined when copying all sorts of files ranging from a few Megabytes to the largest one being about 400 GB.

Actually, since you have cleared up that you are using a USB 3.0 Card and Hub, the bottleneck now will be the actual hard drive which is probably a 5400 RPM drive which by itself is slow then going through the SATA to USB interface slowing it down just a little more. You're probably getting the max speed, that you will get with this setup. My guess is that if you removed the hard drive from the ext case its in and installed it in your desktop your speed would improve very little. While these large 5400 rpm hard drives internally will benchmark at about 90 GBS in real life they barely get 40 GBS so your getting 30+ GBS in an external case is doing quite well.
