    Keyboard and Mouse No Longer Work After Installing A SSD.


    I am using Win 10, and I just installed a Samsung SSD in my Dell Optiplex desktop computer, and my keyboard and mouse no longer work.
    I cloned my hard drive info to the Samsung SSD (USB connection) using the Samsung data migration software, then installed the SSD in my computer, replacing the old hard drive. It appears to boot up as it should, except the keyboard and mouse do not work. Keyboard/mouse are wireless Dynex... I have tried them on a different computer and they work fine, so I know that they are working properly. If I plug in the Dynex dongle receiver into the computer USB port, I get a message that it is being installed, followed by a message that the installation was successful; however, the keyboard and mouse still do not work and there is no cursor on the display.
    When I re-installed the old hard hard drive, it boots up, but neither the keyboard or mouse works. The keyboard apparently works during boot-up, because I can access the Dell diagnostics using the F12 key; however, when I run the diagnostics, everything checks out ok. So, I believe that it is probably a Windows driver issue, but without the ability to use the keyboard or mouse, I have reached the limits of my ability. All of the solutions for this problem that I have seen on-line all require using a keyboard or mouse, but I can't figure out what to do when neither the keyboard or mouse work after boot-up.

    Any chance you can get your hands on a wired keyboard / mouse. Somewhere else in house, friend?

    I would also ensure you were using a USB 2.0 port, preferably one off the back of motherboard.

    If not and this might be a long shot. Windows knows when it is in trouble and after two unsuccessful boots it will offer you the advance startup options. I'm thinking if you can get to safe mode then windows may load the default drivers and it may allow you to uninstall all keyboard mouse drivers. Please show all hidden devices as this is where the conflict maybe.

    So, if you power on and as soon as you see spinning dots hold power button until it shuts off. Power up again, see the spinning dots, hold power button until the system shuts off. Power on again and allow Windows to present you the options. Here is the Advance Startup Options tutorial.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    I don't have a hard-wired keyboard, but I will try to borrow one and try it.

    It didn't seem to matter which USB port I tried... none of them work.

    When I tried turning off the computer several times, I am unable to get the advanced startups menu to appear. It just keeps booting up the same, no matter how many times I do it.

    Look around the Dell forums to see if they have any advice on how to force boot your PC into BIOS or UEFI. If you can do that, you can change the boot order to run the repair utilities from the Windows install media or repair disk.

    PS: If you want to give me your exact make and model for the Dell Optiplex you've got I can ask my old buddy Jason, a former 3rd level tech support guy for Dell who now owns and runs his own computer store, if he knows any tricks.     Thanks. My computer is a Dell Optiplex 990 SFF. I have replaced the original i5 processor with an Intel i7-2600, and I have upgraded the RAM to 16 GB (4 x 4GB). The keyboard and mouse were replaced by a Dynex wireless mouse/keyboard that has a USB receiver dongle plugged into a USB port. The OS had been upgraded to 64-bit Win 10. All of these upgrades had been done with no issues or problems, and the computer had been working fine. The current problem began when I installed a Samsung SSD... I used the Samsung data migration software to clone the contents of my hard drive to the SSD via a USB port, then I removed the HD and installed the SSD. When I booted it up for the first time, it looked like it booted up normally, except that there was no cursor (arrow) on the screen and the mouse and keyboard had no effect. When I re-installed the old hard drive, the same thing happened. That's where I am today.

    When you got into Advance Startup options did mouse work?

    F12 when a Dell start gives boot options.

    Yes, need to know what happens if you force boot into UEFI and/or safe mode, please. Do let us know if you can do either of those things, and if the mouse/keyboard are working or not in either situation. Thanks!

    Did you activate anything in the Bios to use a SSD instead of a HDD eg a Sata Controller ?
