LRW The exact same thing happened to me the other day when I wanted to create a new boot drive.
The CDRW drive would read pre recorded discs perfectly, but wouldn't even recognise a brand new CDR or CDRW. disks.
Disk management displayed "No Media.? with new disks inserted. After much frustration, I dipped a Q-Tip in Isopropy Alcohol and cleaned the drive Laser Lens Bingo! Works fine now. I hope this helps. Please let us know.

I assume this requires taking the unit out and apart to access the lens?

When you run the flash utilty it tells you what the current firmware is.

I tried flashing mine fairly recently because I have a different problem - my dvd drive has given up burning discs, it reads/plays them ok. I think it is a bit over a year old and hasn't been used all that much.

You can get it from Device Manager.

Rt click the drive>properties>Details, scroll to Hardware Ids's

Cool. Thanks SIW2. I see I have the original SB00 and there is a newer SB01. Now, how do I flash it? Is it just a matter of downloading the .exe from FirmwareHQ and running it?

would anyone know if this might be a firmware issue on the SH-222AL drive? I am seeing that there's a couple of versions on http://www.firmwarehq.com/Samsung/SH-222AL/files.html but not sure how to check the current version on the drive, or how to flash it and whether or not it would help.
also noticed that it is showing as SCSI in the HW properties, which I don't recall it being SCSI - it has been a long time since I bought the system.

So, I flashed the firmware on the drive and it shows the same as above but with SB01 now in the details. Still not showing up in THIS PC. I am wondering if something is wrong in the BIOS? It seems odd to me that it is SCSI instead of IDE in the details for the Hardware Ids. Just not sure if there is any hope for this drive at this point.

    Try this:

    Command Prompt (Admin):

    reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

    Then press Enter, then reboot.

(You can copy and paste the command from above)

I believe that I did that manually but will repeat and reboot.
