A colleague of mine is saying that the green chip (which got burnt) can be changed. He is advising to look for old second hard hard drive of the same make. He says that the ports have been damaged, the internal components and the data may be intact. He is recommending to replace the green chip from another hard drive and then running the faulty one to recover data.

That has worked but only by finding an exactly identical drive and using the circuit board off it.
From what I can see on the picture, it looks like the motor wiring is permanently attached to the PCB and not unplugable in which case I wouldn't bother.

Okay. That same guy is saying that my hard drive was 16mb cache and I was running windows 10 on it therefore this disaster happened. He is saying that minimum 64mb cache hard drives should be used to run Windows 10. How true is that? I am posting a photograph of that hard drive too. Attachment 174614

I've use 16MB cache drives on Win10, can't say I noticed any difference to 64MB cache, sounds like he's trying to make a sale! Still using 2 of those 500GB WD Blue drives for data in one of my PC's.

Haha, no he's not trying to make a sale. He is an architect and has nothing to do with selling hard drives. What is the major cause of such hard disk component burns?

Either bad components, something shorting out or possibly over voltage or current from the PSU, probably worth Googling that particular model of hard drive to see if there are any known issues with it, a few years ago now Fujitsu had to replace a load of drives that were failing after just over a year, due to using a substandard chip, which overheated and killed the drives, I had four of them at the time, three died within a year one kept working.

"I don't want to reformat and lose all my files and programs so please do not suggest that."

A professional data recovery agency should be able to recover the data. You may have to decide whether your data is worth paying for it.

As a first step you may contact WD recovery partners for your region and get a qoute from them . Telephonic consultation is free. https://support.wdc.com/warranty/datarecovery.aspx?i

Yes, this is 3½ years down the road but maybe someone might search and wind up here if they're desperate.
There is no "green chip". That's the drive circuit board. You absolutely can *NOT* just get the "same" drive and swap it out. It has to be the exact make, model, hardware and firmware revision of your original drive. If that drive were hardware v1.00000000000002 and you found a drive that was v1.0000000000000199, it won't work.
