I wonder if not having a master boot record on the cloned drive was why I couldn't get it to boot. Makes no difference now, of course.

If that's teh case, makes me think that clone is not truly a clone function.

I just went over to that link and thought I'd go through the process to see if I can get it to work.

It doesn't say, so I'll ask if you know: Do I go through that process first, then go trough the create PE Disk process through Macrium? I am thinking surely so, but thought I'd ask first.

Yes, that's correct. Best to check for an update under "Other Tasks" in Macrium before making the Rescue USB. Just in case you've had it installed awhile, Latest update was in last week or so.

So now, I need to be sure I get a compatible ssd drive. I have found that the drive in the laptop is:

- Sandisk SD8SN8U

I'm thinking this one would be compatible:

- SAMSUNG 850 EVO M.2

I'm not sure how to verify they are compatible. Any thoughts?

I'm not experienced specifically with m.2 SSD, @56Kruiser , but my sense is that if the form factor of the old SSD is m.2 (2280) then the replacement being the same can't be wrong. The 2.5" form factor SATA III SSD I swapped out for the 1TB HDD that came with my laptop is a Samsung 850 EVO and seemed to be the best bang for my buck when I bought it 2 years ago.

Whether the 850 EVO is the best value for you, I can't say, but I can say that the Samsung EVO and PRO lines and then more advanced SSDs seem to be well enough respected by users here at TenForums.

Perhaps some of the members here with m.2 SSD experience can chime in.

Thanks for the input. I am in line with your sentiments.

The SSD I had intended to put in is an EVO.

Since my last post I joined a HP forum and asked about the compatibility there. I think it surely is compatible. I'll post back how it goes.

Both the SanDisk and Samsung being SATA III based are compatible.

Hi,

The Sandisk SSD shown on Newegg is a 2.5" drive. Sandisk has been acquired by WD just for info.
The pic TS posted shows a M2 2280 Sandisk drive as pulled from his machine. So is the Samsung 850 EVO as shown on Newegg
and that one will certainly work.

As others have stated already a cloned drive hooked up through a SATA to USB adapter won't work. Windows 10 wasn't designed with that in mind.

Appreciate all the info folks.

I have the Crucial on the way. I've already made a USB recovery device with Reflect. I'll be doing the copy to the 1TB drive in the laptop.

Any recommendations for best method with Reflect? Can I put a complete drive image on the D: drive to restore to the new SSD stick? I want it to have all the original partitions, including the recovery partition.
