How long does it take for a 2.5 hard drive to spin down completely?

I'd like to know approx how long does it take for a 2.5 portable hard drive to spin down completely after safely ejecting it in windows? Is 3 seconds well enough? Because I want to keep the best condition of the hard drive as long as possible.

Another question: If I leave the portable hard drive working for 24 hours or more hours (Because I am writing 1-2 TB files to them from old drive), will it cause any heat concern... or it's just fine to the hardware????

You don't need to worry much about that as you do of dropping the hard drive. As a portable drive, it should have come in a portable case to help protect against drops. The second you unplug the drive, you can begin moving it.

I doubt it. Should be fine. Just check on them with your fingers to see if they feel warm.

I once left it writing files continuously from another drive for more than a day i.e. 24 hours. I felt a little bit warm, but I don't know if it's warm enough to be bad to the drive

Most of mine have an led that shows when the drive is being accessed. They're either on all the time and flash for access, or only light up during access. On ejecting (depending on make) the light either goes out or flashes for a while then stops flashing. They all seem to take about 3 seconds for the led to indicate the drive is inactive. Listening carefully, the drive stops spinning within the first second, so that's well before the led says it's been shut down.

As long as it does not get hotter than 50C, it will be okay.
