Simrick - Not Windows Spotlight. They're just the stock photos (at least default/stock on my system) That are visible when you select Personalization/Lock Screen.

    Hi Edwin -

Well, that's part of the problem. I don't know how to identify it for you. All you can see are the pictures. I guess I could take a screen shot, but selecting Browse does not take me to the folder where those pictures are. Quite frustrating.

AndreTen - Not sure what you mean exactly. Are you suggesting that if I tried Windows Spotlight that somehow I'd be able to find and select the single picture I want to use? As I understand the Spotlight feature, it picks a picture from a rotating group that Bing discovers. Not sure about that.

Again so we're clear - this worked fine before the latest major Windows Update to Build 16299. My sign-in and lock screen screenshots were identical and that's what I want. The particular picture I want is still my lock screen. The sign-in screen picture has changed to something else.

    Ahhh!
I think you may be referring to C:\Windows\Web\Screen

    @rmanasa

Not sure about a Surface tablet, but they exist on my Windows tablet.

You could try to make copies of them, put them in your folder then try setting one as a Lock/Login image.

I am indeed, Edwin. Thanks for that! This must have come back after I did the reinstall. Great!

So, the picture I want on both my sign-in and lock screen is img102.png. What I get on my sign-in screen is img103.png. I'll reply to any further suggestions in the morning. Thank you all for the help and suggestions offered so far. Greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the welcome, Josey and glad to be here!

Now that I've found the screenshot folder, I'm thinking of what kluges I might try to get this resolved. One might be to rename the img103.png to img103.bak and see what happens.

Another thing I might try would be to put the lock screen image (the one I like) in a different folder, rename it and Browse to that, while renaming the img103.png to img102.png in the "main" folder. Seems like a lot of work, but maybe one of those tricks might fix things.

Oh, and I searched for "img103.png" in the Registry just for the heck of it. Nothing there.

I have always used a imgxxx.jpg picture instead of a .PNG.

    1. I do not believe that using a .BAK on an img will do much good.
    2. The image that you use should be in your pictures and not inside another folder.
    3. You mention a screenshot folder. I have no such folder anywhere.

If your Logon screen is different from your Lock screen (usually mountain lake at logon), delete this registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Creative\<your__ SID>

<your__SID> can be found under key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList, see values ProfileImagePath.

Josey - Using a .jpg file would certainly give me more options, and probably a better quality picture, but I'm on a mission now. <g>

I tried my first "self suggestion" and renamed img103.png to img103.png.bak and rebooted. No joy. Same unwanted screenshot. It turns out there's a duplicate of it at the end of a very long path that I won't retype here. Will try naming that next.

muchmurka - Your suggestion may be exactly what I'm looking for. I'll try that next ... though why this should be necessary or why this changed with the latest Update is beyond me. Will report shortly.

Somebody give muchomurka a gold star. That fixed the sign-in/lock screen screenshot issue. Yay!

The last piece - and this seems minor compared to that - is why the background color changed from blue to gray when I'm restarting or shutting down. Any ideas?
