I tried QTTabBar but looked a bit hard to work with. I read their readme document but found no reference to folder background change. Plus, after selecting the QT Base Toolbar, I see no change (new options) in folders.

I must be doing something wrong.

    Hi, here's my explorer.

And here's a hint as to how to access qttabbar's options. Rt click on the tab bar in explorer (where the tabs appear).
Note: you will probably need to enable the qttabbar toolbar in explorer to see it.

And here are (eg) wordpad and notepad benefiting from a registry background change (which affects several other areas- but not all)

I didn't find the stuff you said above written anywhere in their documentation. I didn't know that I have to select QTTabBar first to access the options. I noticed what that option was doing - tabs appearing inside same window, but I do not want that.

Thanks, you saved my day. Now I can edit my folder backgrounds.

    Cheers mate!

As weird as it might sound, it is still not working for folder background (the grey / yellow / grey part in your screenshot). It changes for folder navigation pane only.

I'm gonna restart again to see if restarting is the problem, but I guess if it changes instantly for folder navigation pane, it should do that for folder background too.

Hi, you have to look thru the options for the different areas. It works once you find the right settings. One is a little more obscure if I recall.

Thank you very much, it works. I had to go to "Compatible folder view" and edit my preferences. Now it works in folders and documents.
