How to replace tray icons? Resource Hacker?

I know how to use Resource Hacker to add/replace/remove normal .exe icons, but there is one .exe that I minimize to tray and by itself it contains no resources for icons or images and YET somehow produces a low resolution ugly icon in tray.

I went ahead and just added a nicer icon to it and it worked for the .exe itself, but the tray icon stayed the same. I tried all kinds of Icon-grabbing programs, but none see the presence of that ugly tray icon...

FYI the .exe I am talking about is TimerTool.exe v3 - Windows System Timer Tool | vvvv . Please let me know if you know how to replace that ugly tray icon...

How do you replace tray icons? In general
Change system tray icons in windows 10 - Solved - Windows 10 Forums
    was offered as a solution.

For your specific program I don't know- the tray icon vanished as soon as I clicked on it.

Is this the icon you wish to change?

    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/te.../TimerIcon.ico

If so It's part of the source code so you would likely have to edit it and then re-compile the program - a lot of older programs used to use non standard icon generation routines so even if this is not the one you are looking for you may find it by trawling through the rest of the code, making your edits and re-compiling

Recompiling is beyond the scope of this forum but you may find one of our program "designer" members may be able to assist you further

Thanks! I was guessing the same, but I am no programmer...

Even if recompiling was beyond the purposes of this forum, knowing that so many browse this space do you nonetheless occasionally feel doubtful that a solution won’t be found?

A programmer would be the ideal profession to have around right now because the author of this program has their project publicly available on GitHub. We can download this project, customise any aspect of the program and have it compiled for reuse.

If you are unable to do this alone, MonarchX, why don’t you attempt to leverage the support of others and specify the icon that should be used for the program’s executable, the taskbar, and tray, anyway, and hope that this will be arranged for you.

I used to do it in previous versions of Windows but my question would be, do you mean the Notification Area where the clock is [called System Tray on versions earlier than WinXP] or the Taskbar, the section between the Start button and the Notification Area?

I was assuming that the "tray icon" mentioned in the question referred to the notification area / system tray and that this was normally populated by use of a small version (16x16) of the standard icon (256x256) that I pointed to in my original post I'm not familiar enough with windows api / programming, (my experience is much older specialist languages), to even look at the code.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge here or at GitHub will be willing and able
