Custom Icons for This PC 'Folders'

Custom Icons for This PC 'Folders'

----- I first posted this as a reply to a tutorial but then I noticed it is better suited here -----

First of all, thanks for this guide and all other guides that eliminate the junk that's just useless and irritating.

I don't need the Musik, Video or Desktop folder so I've already removed the Musik folder; the Desktop folder will also get removed after I tidy up the files there (img 1).

But I would like to have a folder for Star Wars Battlefront II (a quite old game, but I still like playing it; especially with different mods/maps so I have quite a lot of files there that I would like to access quickly and easily).

For that I've simply renamed the Videos folder (img 1).

But as I am quite a perfectionist I would like to change the Videos icon for a Star Wars icon.
And this is where it gets a bit more complicated.

Firstly there are 2 different Properties tabs for the folder: one for My PC (img 2/left) and one for Users/Jippiee (img 2/right).

As you can tell, the properties window for Users/Jippiee (img 2/right) has the option for a Folder Icon but this only affects the folder in Users/Jippiee (img 3) (sadly ).

The Option 'Folder pictures' (img 2) had only affected the Users/Jippiee (again ) and this only when set to at least medium icons (or maybe that was just the file inside ).

Then I started playing around with the desktop.ini file but with no luck.

The top two (img 4) are older backups, the bottom one is the current desktop.ini located in Users/Jippiee/Star Wars Battlefront II.
Unfortunately I only backed up the desktop.ini after renaming it through Properties.

For reference I'm adding the desktop.ini for Pictures (img 5) as that is about how the Videos looked at first with different nummbers.

As far as I understand it the Name and Icon for the Folder are specified throuh the shell32.dll and imageres.dll (img 6).

To me it sounds logicaly to open shell32.dll/ imageres.dll and replace the Videos Icon with the Star Wars icon.

But I don't know how to open/edit .dll files or if that is even advisable (being OS and all).

    So...

Do you see a posiblity for me to edit the desktop.ini to get the right Icon?

Do I have to edit the shell32.dll or imageres.dll (img 5) for this to work?

Is there an option through RegEdit?

I would really appriciate any kind of feedback on this

Hi, your screenshots haven't worked- use the icon to the left of the video icon above your post text.

You need to be very careful. You can easily end up with problems you really don't want.
I hope you are using disk imaging routinely to protect your PC and your data. (Macrium Reflect (free) ).

If you really want to modify dll resources, try Resource Hacker (free). (Easy to find).

I use a couple of programs to quickly modify about 80 icons in imageres.dll, so when this is overwritten - e.g. by SFC /SCANNOW or a major upgrade- it's quite quick to redo the change. Bear that in mind when planning changes like this.

Other than that, I'm very concerned that you will do something that will have a detrimental effect and lead to problems. Be cautious. Rather than randomly trying multiple things focus on one, make sure you have a backup (see disk imaging, above), try the change for a while, if ok, try another.

Be disciplined and do enough research to be confident. Consider whether risking breaking your PC is worth what you're attempting.

I too wondered about this and fortunately I found a solution. Unfortunately it's a paid solution. IconPackager 10 will do this.

    OP
you can change those icons with some tools like "this PC tweaker" and using some " drive icon changer" ( google that ) without any paid software

    This PC Tweaker

I never had problems to customize my rig easily that way and I warn you not trying edit system files ( specially imageres.dll or shell32.dll under windows 10 )
Last MS OS isn't like windows 7 and changing those files can easily break your system and disable boot.
