For those who use WMP, I've got an inexpensive tweak to theme the background in the player only.
    Should have something coherent soon.

Not sure what kind of tweaking you guys have in mind but I'm still using Office 2010 and it looks fine: no modifications just using some of our Windows themes. Had some minor tweaking to do once, but the colors of the installed themes are used.
As Cliff said, Office 2016 uses newer user interface.
Yeah, it's in this thread somewhere but I have no idea how to find it, so I'll repeat here. Basically, I have someone with a W7 work laptop with Office 2013 on it. He is legally blind, and uses ZoomText. The problem is with O2013, there is no way to color the title bars, no contrast between windows, no difference between active/non-active windows, etc. This is a problem, as he uses the title bar/colors around open windows as a reference point to see where he is on the desktop (because of the ZoomText).

I had a fiddle with a W7 hyper-V and 60 day trial of O2013, put it in high contrast and modified some of the colors, and it was working pretty well for him, especially in outlook, (which is the biggest problem), but when he went to an excel spreadsheet, there were no grid lines. He needs dark text on light background for best viewing.

I don't know how compatible the W10 "theme-ing" is for W7, (if at all), so I haven't messed with it. (I really don't comprehend what you guys are doing. It's way over my head.)

His company was using O2010 up until recently and just migrated to O2013, so updating to O2016 is not an option for him at the moment. But I think we would be able to do some reg changes if necessary, if we could prove them first, and then get his IT ppl involved.

Anyways, that's it in a nutshell. If you have any ideas, I am open to them.

How office interprets some of the elements colors depends on the themes but some stuff is just automatically chosen (grid lines) or fixed like explorer/control panel whites on Aero themes.

It seems there's no real color variation between office 2013 themes; whiter, white, almost white ('dark gray' is a joke compared to office 2010). If office decides what active windows and inactive should be colored then we have no solution through theming. Still I'd try High Contrast on Win7 as well. I believe you need customizations on HC White theme for white backgrounds.

I'm in the same situation here; demo testing would be the only way since I don't have office 2013. Back in my previus post there's a link to an excel situation. Depending on theme, the background color needs to be lighter or darker: weird enough I had different results in W7 and W8: But one thing is for sure: Excel changes the grid lines automatically in function of the background, either dark or light, just like desktop icon fonts ,for excel around rgb(225, 225, 225) there's a turning point for bgcolor changing the grid lines. You'll need to play with the 'window' theme color (the main background for text).
However, due to Aero limitations and auto colorization of grid lines, go for HighContrast: dark theme uses white grid lines and white theme uses black grid lines. Aero: grayish grid lines. There aren't many options.

I'd recommend to use it. SMACC works on Win7:

By the way, it saves a theme or themepack which is actually the theme format of Win7. The color elements are basically the same in W7/8/9/10. W7 should have a HC White to start from, customizing at your needs with SMACC. Save and apply the theme until you like the result.
Play with the 'window' to change the background around excel grid lines.

Thanx H, didn't test on Win7, TBH, I see we need to do some preview mapping still...

Anyway, I'm thinking theme file options are too restrictive... has anyone created msstyles files (I think they take precedence over the theme colours) - I had a look at this utility but it's all a bit foreign to me - I suppose those ending in "styles" are the relevant ones to change... if it's viable I can include it in SMACC - speaking of which, I messed around a bit and got a cool gradient menu bar - dunno how tho'...

That is odd Craig, usually in Win10 gradients go up & down, and not left to right.

Agreed but there is one gradient left-right possible: see below.

Don't really see how you got those there in the program, but pretty nice.
Those are not the titlebar gradient colors last time I checked:

See red and blue... W7; I've didn't tested this on W10 neither.

Once upon a time on Win7, yes I tried.

EDIT: Craig, thanks for the link!
Those are indeed the ones that contain sprites/png/gradients as well.
However guess you'll end up patching your uxstyles since modified mssstyles themes aren't allowed to run by default.
I do remember it nuked my install - got some pretty heavy glitches - and I was back to square one running in High Contrast again.
