    Why are my Drive icons not working with Autorun.inf

    Hello fellow Windows 10 likers,

    I've customized my Win10 from the start, and I've used an AUTORUN.INF file to have a custom drive icon for most of my drives in 'This PC'.
    This is an (old) example of this:

    But since a week or so -maybe because of an update or something- the drive icons are not custom anymore.
    They have the 'stock look' again:

    The AUTORUN.inf file is still there in every drive WITH the right icon, yet it does not seem to work anymore.
    This is in the D:/ Drive:

    (the folders still do have a custom icon, but that works differently)

    Also the J drive (picture 2) is an USB and had an ICON and NAME too, they dont pop up anymore either.

    Does anyone have a clue what to do to get my custom icons for my drives / partitions back?

    Hi, I can only comment on the first point.

    Each major build upgrade (and potentially in updates) all Windows files are replaced. So any - such as imageres.dll- that have been hacked/customised will be changed.

    The same applies if you do an in-place upgrade repair install.

    I apply my custom icons using a program- thus I only have to run that to prepare a customised version of imageres.dll once per new major build, and copy that manually into the relevant folder should it be necessary.

    Not sure if this would do it, but maybe resetting the icon cache?

    Just to be clear:
    I use a 'autorun.inf' file with this in it:
    [autorun]
    icon="blackdrive.ico"
    And there is a blackdrive.ico in the same directory.

    I use to read the autorun.inf file automatically and change the ICON of the drive accordingly,
    but now my PC does not do this anymore.

    Today I've tested a USB-stick (a Windows 7 installation USB) that has a certain ICON (thats loaded with autorun.inf like usual.
    I've put it in my laptop; no problem

    Then I put the USB-stick in my PC, and there is no icon:

    (also the D drive, the X drive, the C drive and the P drive should have custom icons)

    Anyone have a clue what to do?

    I've tried the 'Resetting of the icon cache', did not help
    I've removed and repasted the autorun.inf and changed the names, did not help

    I just tried it on 10 Pro 14393 build with autorun.inf like this:
    Code:
    [autorun]
    icon=w.ico
    label=This is a USB

    It works (with and without label) on internal drives, external USB and SD card. I can't help therefore but the functionality isn't gone.

    I ad my drive icon customization with a registry key added into the registry the key local is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons
    Create a key with the drive letter then in it a key named DefaultIcon with the path of the icon, as below

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\C][HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\C\DefaultIcon]@="%SystemRoot%\\\\ICL\\\\goof.ico"

    Cheers people!
    Thanks for the tip and thanks for letting me know the functionality should not be gone!

    I think something is broken in my system.
    Will reinstall Win10 somewhere begin 2017 and I'll see if I have the same problem.
    If so ill use the registry key trick!

    Ok. Don't want to reinstall my (except for drive icons) perfectly working Win10
    So I used the register trick:
    1. Go to register to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons
    (if DriveIcons don't exist yet, make this key)
    2. Make a new key here per drive and call the key the letter (example: D)
    3. Make a new key in this letter and name this key 'DefaultIcon'
    4. Change the value of the string here to the path of the icon you want for this drive letter
    5. Done

    Example of how it can look like:

    Ok, Solved for me!
