I was just stopping by to answer my own ancient question about an Oblytile alternative, but it looks like you guys have already been talking about Tile Creator. Haven't had a chance to test it out myself yet, but will soon.

I would like to know how I can make a tile of a file.
All it does for me is launch TileCreator and asking for an App to open it. Don’t think I’m doing anything wrong.
I'm trying to open a pdf.
Had all my pdf-books nicely lined up with oblytile, and i loved it.

You can go to a few sites to convert png to ico for free. Here's the one that I use:

Thanks for the link. Good to know about that app.

Oblytile acutally lets you change the color and use a .png icon of your choice... total customization of the tiles. I don't know of an alternative, but since Oblytile isn't compatible maybe someone else will make a nice customization tool. Probably just a matter of time.

Would be great if MS would let us use .png as well as .ico in the year 2015.

Until there is an app that allows you to pin custom tiles without first launching the program that makes them then there is no alternative to Oblytile.

I made a few apps when I tested windows 10 for developers. I'm new to the app developer scene and kinda just picked it up as a new hobby for my spare time. If you'd like, I could pick apart oblytile and see how it works, then just create my own windows 10 version. Mind you, whatever I end up creating will most likely be buggy at first an you'll need to report bugs to me.

I shouldn't have any problems figuring out how to create it though... I dissected the windows 8 Evernote app to see how it worked and successfully created my own (for fun and education, not profit).

I won't be posting any finished product online for download or in the app store, ever. Anyone that wants to help with a testing phase or would like to install the finished product can e-mail me at brittanyoyster@gmail.com

Unfortunately, I have to agree... it's a real annoyance. The developers seem to agree that it's not possible, but maybe someone will find a way.

As of yet, I have not seen an alternative to Oblytile for customizing desktop app tiles on the start menu (Oblytile does not work on 10) but if someone happens to spot one, or knows about a working alternative, please post here.

    Thank you very much.
